Tire split after track day - concern?
I put a new set of the Vredesteins on and went to Road Atlanta Sunday. When I was switching out my pads when I returned, I noticed the inside of the tire had split. It doesn't go that deep, but it is split. Should I be concerned? Is it a defective tire? The tires did really good at the track, expecially considering what they cost. Once I got the air pressure right, the stick pretty good, were very predictable, but seem to squeal a lot. Thanks in advance.

I bet it is a Kumho....

No it's a Vredestein Sezentra(sp?). Made in Germany I believe. Apparently a big tire manufacturer over there that has been around a long time. The all new rave of inexpensive tires that fit the C4, C5, and C5 Z06. Take a look in the C5 Z06 section. There is a thread that had gone on for over a year. Price as good as the Firestone WO, but supposedly a better tire.
My FS WO have been on track and AX'd a bunch of times. No splits or adverse affect. Other than roughing up the tread and rounding the edge a bit.

Oh, OK. I should slow down when I read.
The Kumhos will sometimes split, or used to start splitting, along the seam on the width of the tire.
While I have not been told or reassured personally by Kumho, some others I have heard from told me this is, or was, common to the early Kumho V710s but did not represent any sort of compromise on the tire. I have seen this happen, but it has never happened to me, so I never personally checked into it.
It is further my understanding that the more recent V710s are not doing this.

Here are the pics from the inside left front. It appears to be on the rim protector part. Hopefully it is nothing - it doesn't look serious.

It looks to me like it got caught on something . . . and from the looks of the wheel, I'd guess that it's rubbing on the a-arm. If that's the case, I'd be more concerned about catching that little flap again, and causing something big.
I wouldn't chance it, especially without getting a better idea what caused it . . . . . but that's just me.

To me, that's a cut, not a split. I notice in your sig you're running 18/19" wheels, I assume those are the wheels you were running?
The wheel and tire have both been rubbing on something in the wheel well; you need to find out what that is, because it could be causing more problems than a cut in a tire.
For street use, you're probably (probably) OK. For the track, you need to fix that rubbing before you use those wheels/tires again.
HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

IMO, I wouldn't run it on the street OR the track . . . . just because it's more likely that you'll be full lock (and, rubbing up against whatever it is that caused that to begin with) on the street.
What I don't get (esp if it's the driver's front) is how it got cut to begin with . . . it's almost like you were full lock in reverse . . . but it's hard to see for sure if that's the case based on the pics.

You have a serious wheel and tire contact issue to find and fix for safety reasons first.
Is the tire carcass exposed? If not, I say your good for the street and probably for the track if its only the extra rubber/wheel protection area. Pull the rubber back and send another pic.

You need to examine your car very carefully. Something is either scraping or you got something caught in there. The scrape on the wheel indicates something hard, not just tire chunks being picked up on the track.
This is a serious safety issue!
Check out all other tires/wheels for signs of rubbing. If they are not showing any sign swap tires and recheck after short test drive. If the scrape did not come back, try to push the car a little to see if you have a problem under load.
Did you have an off-road event, possibly in a gravel pit?
Please don't ignore this problem we don't want to hear about your mishap on your next track event.
