Default Spoiler - ALMS St. Pete

The LGM corvette only qualified 11th (out of 14) in GT2, 3.5 secs off the GT2 P1 pace of the Flying Lizard's GT3 RSR. The Ford GT qualified 10th in GT2, .1 secs faster than LG

The #2 Audi R10 qualified P1 overall (1.02.8), and its laptime is currently FASTER than all of the Indy cars. Fastest IRL in practice so far is Castroneves at 1.03.3

Note to west coast fans (at least in LA), the race is being televised on tape delay instead of live

it will be very hard to ever get the front engined cars to be competitive with the Porsches and Ferraris at low speed tracks. Out of a low speed corner, the Porsches accelerate like they have all-wheel-drive compared to a Vette. If GM decides to support the GT2 effort, you might see the ALMS help equilize things....if not, it will be a huge battle for the Vette.

I loved the days of the Porsche 917 when it ran Spa at 9 seconds a lap quicker than the F1 cars of the day.

Thanks for your insight. All of the front engined GT2 cars are at the back of the pack.

May be why GM does not officially help in that class. They like racing just one lame team.

I went to the Friday afternoon practice and qualifying and took some video:

It was a great day and I'm looking forward to watching the real thing tomorrow.

Why is Bell Motorsports a lame team?

They are lacking the support of a factory team. Can you tell me how many race series have 4 cars racing each other or 3 in a class like we just saw in LMP1? They were missing parts for the Aston in the previous race and only had one car? I may be mistaken but I think I remember that. Three or four cars in a class is a waste and leads to confusion as they annouce LMP1 & 2 as racing each other.

Did the #4 C6R actually run a 1:01.896 lap averaging 104.69mph DURING THE RACE?

That's faster than the R10's 1.02.8 QUALIFYING TIME!

Please tell me it's true and not just a timing glitch!

I was at the ALMS race today in St. Pete. So much fun. Here is another video showing the Corvette C6.R's from flag to flag.

Actually, in the ALMS world they ARE racing each other for overall wins. Last year the ACO minimum weights for prototypes were 925KG for LMP1 and 775KG for LMP2 (LMP2 125KG lighter). In order to re-establish a performance differential between LMP1 and LMP2 classes, the ACO revised the minimum weights for 2008; 900KG for LMP1 and 825KG for LMP2 (LMP2 75KG lighter).

IMSA/ALMS, however, wants to keep the performance of the LMP2's competitive with the LMP1's so in the ALMS series for this year the minimum weights are 925KG for LMP1 and 800KG for LMP2, which maintains the LMP2's 125KG weight advantage. At Le Mans the Audis get to drop 25KG and the Porsche RS will have to add 25KG.

They want to keep it competitive because they have no cars in LMP1

It will be interesting to see how the M3 fares in GT2. It seems like it will be a pretty serious effort.

Huh, please elaborate. Every picture I have seen of the LGM/Riley it seems to me that the engine/chassis is a frt/mid (behind frt suspension) vs the 430 w/a mid/rear vs 997 w/ rear. The 997 is no better at launching the the 430 and the 430 is a mid engined car. Now if the 430 and Riley are running at the same weight dist. balance (50/50) what makes them so different as to lead you to believe that the Vette is no match for either the 997 or 430?

Autocon doesn't have two pro drivers, Cytosport is in Europe getting assistance running their new Lola B07/10 Judd which was the FASTEST gasoline LMP1 car last year, and ECO Racing will return for Utah.
