HELP NEEDED: Who Makes These Wheels? What Are They Worth?
I REALLY need some help here guys. A guy I know is offering to sell me a set of the wheels below. Problem is I can't tell the manufacturer. Hoping someone will take the time to help me out.
They are a ZR1 style wheel. He nor I can tell if they are good (i.e., expensive) or cheap knockoffs. Cast or forged? Manufacturer, etc.
I didn't weigh them but they are a light wheel.
They look just like the picture below which I grabbed from the Mid America Motorworks website.
Markings on the wheels:
FRONT
Scribed on the inside lip:
17x9.5 +54 2.788 5x4.75 05/14/02 2nd 1831
Cast/marked on the inside spokes:
Spoke 1: F.R. Made in USA
Spoke 2: 0502T917
Spoke 3: AO50702
Spoke 4: Max Wheel Load 1400 lbs
Spoke 5: 17x9.5J DOT-T
REAR
Scribed on the inside lip:
17x11 +50 2.788 5x4.75 01/03/03 3rd 2384
Cast/marked on the inside spokes:
Spoke 1: F.R.
Spoke 2: 17x11
Spoke 3: Made in USA
Spoke 4: 1202L741
Spoke 5: C121702
I have NO idea what they are worth.
I appreciate anyone taking the time to help me out.
Rick

I'm not sure what to make of this comment. Not the kind of help I'm looking for....
Mid America sells a wheel just like these for $620 EACH. If these are them, which I have no idea that they are that's not exactly junk.

Anybody have more productive help?

Rick,
Weigh the wheels. Repo wheels are heavy, the 17x11s may weigh close to 30 lbs. Original GS wheels are considerably lighter (although I don't know the weights).
Strength wise, the repos are widely used for autox and DEs, and are strong as an ox (boy, did I just date myself ). Plenty strong for DEs and autox use.
As mentioned above, repos run about $400-500 for a set of 17x9.5 and 17x11 wheels. I'm not sure what used wheels would go for, although I'm probably going to be selling mine in the near future (just got a set of 18x10.5 Speedlines this weekend ).
HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

The early AFS wheels were made in the USA. Later versions were made in Japan and the current wheels have no markings so they are probably made in China.
The numbers (spokes 2 and 3 on the fronts and 4 and 5 on the rears) are probably casting number or jproduction job numbers)
The very thin polished lip is what AFS wheels used when they first came out with a GS-style wheel. Original GS wheels (made by A-Mold for GM) had a much wider polished area that extended back to where the spokes met the rim. The A-Mold wheels may have even had a GM part number.
From the MAM link, those are the originial A-Mold wheels and explains why they are so expensive. They are good wheels and are both lighter and stronger than the current ZR-1 replica wheels on the market today.
AFS Wheels sells on eBay so you might try to contact them to see if they could help with identification.
OE Wheels were another supplier of GS-style wheels but I have no idea if their suppliers were US manufacturers.

DING-DING-DING-DING We have a winner. WVZR-1 suggested Factory Reproduction in another thread. I just spoke to Factory Reproductions and he is correct, they are their wheels. The F.R. on the inside spokes is the tell.
Manufacture dates of 2002 and 2003 was when they were still making in the USA, now in China.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
