Default Update on Mike Tracy Jr

Gang,As some of you might know, Toby Grahovec and I had been working with the Tracy's at the Runoffs. I wanted to give a brief update on Mike Jr.'s condition in its own thread, even though some of the info has already been posted elsewhere.

Mike is out of the med. induced coma as of this afternoon and talking a bit. His breathing tube was removed this morning and he's responding well. His body is pretty beat up, but it looks like he's in the clear on the neuro end of things.

Now please, please, please go get a HANS if you don't have one.

And keep the Tracy's in your thoughts.

Hope he has a full and speedy recovery

I don't know whether they require it, but I think I read that Mike, Jr was wearing a HANS.

I think the message they're trying to get across is that Mike, Jr might not be with us if he hadn't been using a HANS, so they're trying to emphasize how important a piece of gear it is.

I hear ya Tom, not as of yet but it should be. I bought mine a few years back, can't be cheap on safety items. Like the other guy said, if he didn't have it, it could have changes the results.

Great to hear about Mike Jr, we will still keep him in our prayers!

I agree. As of now I am just doing track days and HPDEs with the intent to do time trials. All of which dont require any sort of saftey other than long sleeves are "recommended". I have a HANS and full fire suit, glove, and shoes to make myself feel better. I hope never to have to use them but I would rather feel safe than be sorry later.

SCCA does not require a HANS. It would put a lot of older formula cars out of competition as they have no room for one.

They looked into it a little while ago and talked to insurance companies to see if they could get cheaper insurance if they went to mandatory head and neck restraints. They were told by the insurance companies that there was no statistical data to support requiring HANS and they would not change rates at all because of it.

"no statistical data"

Everyone knows statistics lie.

But it is THEIR life and THEIR events.

Guess they did not read the FIA technical bulletin on safety

I will keep and use mine.

I don't buy that as a reason. I have the FIA approved Safety Solutions Hybrid Pro, and I can't think of any car it would not fit in. If you fit, it will fit.

the older formula cars that race with SCCA shouldn't have any problems having one fit. I'm 6'3 and race a 1969 Winkleman Formula Ford; given my size I'm already a tight fit, but my HANS doesn't interfere (and I wouldn't get in the car if it did). The only cars I see maybe having an issue are the ones that people have either modified (I've seen a few shady looking FB's and other cars that have been altered to fit a tall person) and the belts aren't in a position to allow for one, or like you said are very old and unless altered/updated a HANS just wouldn't work. But the same goes for the similar era of production cars as those formula cars where the driver is way up in the air sticking out of the car and is hardly protected. If you go to a VARA, CSRG or other historic (with mono-posto rules) event you will see these cars (bc most are worth a lot and the drivers don't race them, they "tour" them); but not with SCCA.

But that's just my opinion...

I was going to get the Hans Sport. But decided to with the Pro. I smile every time I put in on. And am truly amazed how many people running SCCA don't have one. For the price of a set of tires you can get a Hans.........hmmmmmm

GET A HANS DEVICE OR SOMETHING SIMILAR !!!
