Where to test for top speed
Where is the closest facility to Washington DC to test a car for top speed.
Guessing my car can do near 200 and would need at least a mile to get to speed.

VIR - full course, back straight.
Maxxon mile (may have spelled it wrong)
Bonneville
Back straight at Road Atl, Front straight at Summit Point are too short.
What does it matter??

To test for max velocity on your car, you are going to need some where with 2-3 miles of uninterrupted perfect road for acelleration and then adequate stopping room. There is no where with anything close enough room on the east coast. The TRD center in Texas with it's huge oval - where many of the manufacturers do their testing is probably the closest. On many of the tracks you can get to high velocities, but finding MAX V is another story all together. Be prepared to spend huge $ for access. I am with JAA1992 - what does it really matter besides bragging rights ?

NASA Texas Mile
I know about the NASA Texas Mile but was looking for an official timing place to measure the top speed and if I am lucky be able to join a 200 mph club.
As for "Why does it matter?"
The answer is "Because I can."

Maxton mile if 1 mile if that is enough (takes HUGE HP to get 200 in the mile - think 800hp+ at the wheels), or there is a 1.5 mile drag in Maine now. Both use rules requiring full cages though for that kind of speed.

Here's a good clip of a c5z with twin turbo's, 870rwhp just got 200mph, cool stuff-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD0gmgtxjFA
unless that Calloway's something other than the normal calloway mods, it ain't going to make it up there in the mile IMO.

The Maxton mile is the event held at Laurinburg-Maxton airport in Laurinburg, NC. See this web site for details. www.ecta-lsr.com
It is held by the East Coast Timing Assoc.

Matxon Mile with the East Coast Timing Association is possible. But they do limit first timers to 135 mph.
Much over that and a full cage, fire suppression and other safety requirements would be needed.
for a Corvette to hit the 200 mph mark is close if not more then 800 hp.
Sounds like fun.
the Big Bend ( Texas) Road Race, the Silver State Classic ( NV), and IIRC NE and OR states also have an Open road Race.
Check each events rules.
Go for it

Make sure you tune out the speed limiter.
C6= 186mph limiter from the factory
C6Z= 205mph limiter from the factory
Not sure where the GS falls but would assume same as C6. I learned the hard way during the Miami mile event.

The places you are looking for would be either Bonneville at the Great Salt Lake in Utah or El Mirage in Southern CA in San Bernadino County. Those are the longest places in the country to get a true top speed measurement. IIRC, their timing lights are one mile apart and you have 2-3 miles to accelerate, a mile for timing, and a loooong shutdown area.

1 Mile TT of a Daily Driver !
Thanks for all the feedback.
I think I would be happy with a 1 mile TT (Maxton Mile like) event.
However, It looks like there is not an organized event that allows for a one day session of a run or two to see how fast my car will go in a mile without having to add a roll bar / cage, fire extinguisher, and 5 point harness.
Anybody know of an organized event that I can attend to try a 1 mile TT but not need to invest in all the hardware for a 1 time test of how my daily driver performs.

Dan,
Please keep in mind that if you get even close to your objective, and anything goes wrong, without the appropriate safety equipment, your daily driver will not be a daily driver any more, and you will not be one either.

Somone was posting of an event in FL for the mile thing but did not have all the safety requirements of the Maxton. Seems like it was at an airfield. Try searching as it was pretty recent. Good luck.

Please note the short 0.5 mile runoff. I had no problems at 160s to 170s, but at 200+, I suspect there may be some cause for concern.

Maybe one of the open road races like Big Bend in TX or the Silver State.
However, if they catch you exceeding your class max allowable speed, you'll be DQ'd (and perhaps permanently banned if they consider it reckless).
