best road race/ street tire?
#3
What your asking is what is the best comprimise between both...
ultimate grip verses nice handling street tires that last a couple thousand miles.
you can wax a set of street tires in a parking lot auto X so on a road course you can pretty much count your street tires out.
I'm sure there are some good tires out there that can perform OK on the track and still be OK to run on the street...
What you will end up with is comprimised lap times...2-5 seconds per lap and comprimised street wear...10k vs. 20k.
You can make a tire work for both but you end up sacrificing both experiences.

The Nitto 555 RII works well for me. I have P275 40 17 on the front and 305-35-18 on the rear. I don't have a trailer, so these get me to and from the track as well.

Nitto 555RII is a track tire which happens to be street legal. I don't hesitate to drive on the street but would prefer not to and change to true street tires for trips longer than half hour just cause I don't want to waste them on the street. I had to drive two hours in rain to get to VIR when my tow vehicle trans let go and ended up having to drive 7 hours back home after. Wouldn't have wanted to try that on V710 or R6. They are a compromise but lean heavy toward the track and last about 6x longer than R6 or 710s and cost $400 less per set. Like everything else you read here it all depends on what you want.

About the best that I came up with for both & it is not a true track tire but works well is the Kumho Ecsta XS, price is not bad also. If I put my stickey tires on I run a couple of seconds faster.

I agree with Jason.
Finding a "Road Race" tire that is also good for the street is like trying to find a good toothbrush that will also substitute for toilet paper.
Both have specific duties and would suck at anything else.

I've used Toyo R888s (C6) and Nitto 555R2s (C5Z06) and they're both good compromise tires. They're both also quite decent in the rain-- and by that I mean predictable if one isn't stupid with the go-pedal.
If you're running an 18" wheel I believe the Nittos save you some $$s (no 19" sizes).

+1. I'm on my 2nd set. I don't waste them on the street but I think they make a great arrive-and-drive tire. I don't hesitate to drive them 5 hr down to VIR and back after 2 days there.
