Default Photos from the North American International Auto Show

On Saturday morning 100 members of our Corvette Club were allowed into the North American International Auto Show one-hour before the 9:00 a.m. public opening.

While I was there I took several pictures of the new LT1 engine cutaway, the TR6070 cutaway, and the C7's aluminum frame. I also had a discussion with Harlan Charles, Corvette Marketing Manager, and he answered some of my questions.

Here goes:

The above picture shows a model of the 2014 Corvette Z51.

For those of you wondering what the interior colors will be, the above panel shows you the choices you will have at Job 1, 2014.

Next, I asked Harlan Charles what the 7th gear ratios would be for the two manual transmission. Harlan told me that the first six gears would be about the same, and the base vehicle's 7th gear will be 0.42:1 and the Z51's 7th gear will be 0.48:1.

So here is what the seven gears in the two Tremec TR6070 transmissions will look like:

Base Vehicle ---------- Z51

-
1st -- 2.66 -------------- 2.97

2nd -- 1.78 ------------- 2.07

3rd -- 1.30 ------------- 1.43

4th -- 1.00 ------------- 1.00

5th -- 0.74 ------------- 0.85

6th -- 0.50 ------------- 0.56

7th -- 0.42 ------------- 0.48

The following pictures are of the TR6070 7speed transmission cutaway:

The above three pictures are side-views of the transmission.

The above picture shows 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.

The above picture shows 5th, 6th, 7th, and Reverse gears. Reverse is on the right.

The above three pictures show a passenger side-view of the shift forks.

Now we move to the LT1 6.2L V8:

The above picture shows part of the Front-End Accessory Drive - FEAD. Note the water pump has been moved to the passenger side of the engine. Also note the variable camshaft phasing components. The oil pump is also new. It has two sections, and is electonically controlled for the wet sump system.

The above picture is a front-view of the FEAD. Note that there isn't a power steering pump. The C7 uses a ZF electric steering gear. It's the same Steering Gear as used in the 911 Porsche.

The above picture shows a side-view of the oil pan. Note the new location of the drain plug. I wonder if the oil will hit the left-front tire while you are draining it. Also note that the oil dip stick in now located in the oil pan, not in the block.

Now take a look at the new spark plug and its location. Without being able to measure the plug, it looks to me like the threaded portion of the plug is longer than LS1 through LS9 plugs.

As most of you have already read, the LT1 has direct fuel injection, and because of that the piston and combustion chamber have been computer modeled. Note the size of the piston dome that GM designed to get the engine to 11.5:1 compression ratio.

The above picture shows the rear of the camshaft. The last lobe is used to drive the LT1's high pressure fuel pump. In the C5 and C6 Corvette, engine fuel pressure was 58 psi. In the C7, the fuel pressure will be 2,200 psi.

The last engine picture shows a closeup of the LT1's high pressure fuel pump. Note the heavy spring below the pump.

Finally, most of you have read that the C7 Corvette has changed the location and angle of its radiator. Unlike the C3 through C6 Corvette, the C7's radiator is tilted forward. Air enters the grill, passes through the air conditioning condenser, then the radiator, past the cooling fans, and then a new duct moves it upward to the opening the hood. The next picture shows the duct work that passes the air to the opening in the hood:

The final picture shows the radiator support bracket that is attached to the front of the frame. Note how the radiator cradle is tilted forward:

ENJOY ! !

No, I didn't miss the car or the model.

There are many pictures of the Cyber Grey coupe and the model on the net, but I didn't notice any pictures of the LT1 or TR6070.
