Default oil pressure at idle

Just coming off several hot laps at the Glen I noticed my idling oil pressure was 15 ,oil temp of 246. Just wondering if I shpulf be looking into a better cooler?

Had the oil temp dropped at that point or was that while lapping?
The oil pressure number is fine for idle, assuming you are getting ~50+psi at high rpm.

Yeah, high RPM I'm getting good pressure, I had just noticed the low pressure while checking tire pressure in the pits. Thanks

Mine did that too with super hot oil temps. I put a higher oil pressure spring in. Put a 70psi spring now I have 60 on track and 40 idle with 40 wieight oil.

What weight of oil? 246 is not a bad oil temp at all.

You might want to look into something thicker if you are still running a 5w30 in the car. Maybe something in the 40w range.

FYI it takes about 7 psi of oil to float the crank off of the bearings with no load on it...so 15 is a bit on the lower side but not to the point of catching a bearing at idle.

I am running 5w30. I will have to rectify that.

Thanks Anthony.

I run 0W 40 in the summer for the track season. Mellings high vol high pressure pump for my tall CAM setup. I see 50+ at idle until hot.. THen it drops to 38-40 at idle. I see up to 60 when hot on the track... Oil temps are still too high for me (285-290) with Z51 EOC and ext Z51 cooler inline.. Like to get them down more for track days. Oil warms up quick on the street and no problem getting to 210-220 just driving normally... hmmm.

Keeping your oil temps in the 240-265 range will give you the best life for your oil. A very good synthetic oil can see short times above 290 but not for long before it starts to loose a lot of its additives so it is best to keep it under 300, if it does reach it that temp then make sure you change the oil after your event.

I have the same thing happen. I use Brad Penn 20w-50
Dry Sumped
on a cold start my oil pressure is around 60-65 psi
warm idle sits at 30-40 psi
on the track i have good oil pressure at high RPM 50-55 PSI
Once i get off the track and in the pits my oil pressure drops below 20 psi
It sits around 13-15 psi

If i let it cool down for a few minutes and start it back up, the oil pressure is right at 20-25 psi

Running a mechanical gauge from the oil filter assembly. So i dont know exactly how accurate it is. The car doesnt burn any oil

10qt dry sump

Never had an issue with oil pressure dropping while on track.
It only goes that low when at idle after very hot laps

After asking a few other more experienced Vette owners at the track they all agreed that this is normal, and with dry sump systems, its about were its supposed to be.
