Not sure what this does. It appears to be great at preventing me from getting an easy read on pad thickness. Is this needed?

Anti-rattle clip. Not essential, only there to keep tension on the pads to reduce the chance of brake squeak.

stops the pads from chattering... if you don't mind chatter, then you won't need it.

Is that the one where the pad ends slot? If so I tried leaving it off and had much more pad knock back. I had to pre pump the brake even after short straights to have a firm pedal. With it back on I don't need to do that at all.
