Default Slicks?

Hi currently running Toyo R888s on a 2007 ZO6 with a four corner balance and a good track alignment but the front tires push real bad halfway through the second session. Would I be better off running slicks? Been pretty hot out here in the SoCal Desert. Have never been on slicks before and which are the best? Thanks for the help!

Try scrub slicks from Forum vendor GT RAcing tires. They are slightly used (some teams have only mounted and dismounted them) and they are dirt cheap ($50 to $200/tire).

I'm surprised you didn't have oversteer issues rather than understeer with those tire pressures.

I'd like to hear more on this as well.......I'm running an '07 Z on R888's as well and run similar pressures: I'm aiming at 37 psi hot all around, but admittedly I am trying different pressures to see what works. Running higher pressures don't seem to increase grip, so trying a bit lower, hence the 37psi target hot pressures. I ran a track day at Sears Point recently at 37psi and ran ok, but not fastest of the group.

R888s only last ~10 mins in the heat before getting greasy. R7s have much more staying power and a bit more grip. Full slicks are even more sticky when fresh, but don't have as much life as the R7s. Ease into these though, they don't give as much warning before letting loose (almost no tire squeal until you're sideways). Have to manage the slip angle visually.

Sometimes people complain about tires and handling problems. Handling problems can come from several reasons exclusively or in combination. In this particular situation the understeer can be from:
  • Improper driver inputs
  • chassis set-up issues, such as alignment, corner balance, shock settings, etc.
  • Wrong tires pressures
  • Different heat cycling age of the tires
  • Inadequate tire size on the front

I am not a fan of the R888. I had trouble finding the right pressures for those tires and I never found a good setting. I have heard this from so many other experienced drivers.

Trying to diagnose this on a forum is tough and likely wrong. Were you at BRP this past weekend?

I hate the R tires from Hoosier. I don't have personal experience with the R7, but the R6 and predecessors heat cycle so quickly and badly. They might have rubber left, but none that I care to use after two heat cycles. It is A7s for me all the way down to the cord and they are still faster than R tires new.... OK, there is a little bit of hyperbole there, but not much.

Here is a good thread on R888s, most all of the negative stuff I agree with - http://www.trackhq.com/forums/f296/i...888-info-9537/

I was at Button Willow Raceway this weekend and no grip up front at all. Four corner balance with 50% right in the middle. Never could figure out right tire pressure. Thanks Olitho. Gives me lot to think about.

Which car and which group were you in?

Do you have any in-car video?

I was only there on Saturday and ran the red group. Have a 07 ZO6. Looks like I will try the A-7. Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. R888s suck!

I am not familiar with them. They might be good, but i am dubious of most shops.

What alignment settings do you have?
  • Camber
  • Toe
  • Rake
  • Ride height
  • Caster

I use Goodyear slicks on my C4 and Goodyear wants me at 32 psi hot. That seems to work. It also agrees with the temps across the thread.

If you're running 37psi is the center of the tire hotter than the edges?
