Good reason not to buy a cheap Engine Stand (Pics)
I bought this engine stand 4 or 5 years ago from advanced auto parts. I thought it had served me well for the $30 or so I paid. Tonight I was moving a motor around and just happened to glance down.
This could have been disasterous in more ways than one. Tomorrow I replace it, with a good one!
This looks harmless enough:
This was an accident waiting to happen. That's not just a split in the powdercoating. You can see right through it.

That's what you get when you mess with fat block chebbys.
A little problem with quality control at the tubing mfg. plant. In China, Bengaladesh or Pakistan?

That's not from rust. That's from a Chinese tubing mill that wasn't paying attention and rolled the weld seam into a corner. Good tubing mills keep the weld seam on a flat surface to avoid that problem.
"V" grind the crack and get a good welder to weld it back up.

Very few things that you can buy anymore that are made in the USA. Most everything is made by outsourcing to another country. Mexican crap isn't much better than the oriental stuff we get now.

I wouldn't make too much of it.
Put it for sale on Craigslist for $25-$30 with a "needs repair" tag and the crack in plain sight and some welder's "I am Mr. Fix It"/Cheap Project meter will go to Red Alert...
Take the cash and buy a new Cheapie Stand which you'll probably
have better luck on...
Quality Control on the Cheapies isn't always the best but you
know this going in... Engine Stands aren't something that normally
get rolled around alot.. just every now and then if you're a hobbyist
instead of a professional builder.... use will be minimal.
Use the money you save to buy a cheapie 2 ton Floor Jack, 4 way
Bar, Chain Hoist, etc....
Or buy some good used stands and your next local swap meet
and rattle can a nice new coat of Chevy Orange on them.
No need to go overboard when you only use things occasionally.

This was the first winter outdoors but it was under my deck and stood up on end. Any water should have run right out of it. Always a possibility though.
