Default Good Data!

Frank, Thanks for posting this problem. Whenever I smell gas, it freaks me out, quite frankly. Fire+Fiberglass=. I am off to NAPA tomorrow to get that cap and see if that stops the smell. I also plan to re-seal the tank cover as the factory did for some reason?
Once again this is the place to shop for all your vintage Corvette problems.

Ever since my carb fire I've been paranoid about the smell of raw gas myself.

I used bead caulk from Lowe's to seal the gas tank cover...you can tear it longways and make it fit quite nicely...and replace pieces as needed if you ever reopen the cover:

as long as the tank uses a vent hose, you're still going to have the occasional smell and/or overflow of gas; especially if the tank is completely full.

Got you there Bill, I purchased a device (2 actually) from Corvette Central. "Petroleum Gas Olfactory Diverter" one for me and one for my passenger for only $29.95. Apply to the nostrils after each fill-up. For another $10 each they come with C1 Corvette logos.

You have 2X4 carbs. Go through the gears once or twice on the way home after gassing up and the full gas tank problem will go away...Bill has the opposite problem-With his star wars FI unit, overdrive (and dual master cylinder) , his car actually generates fuel and he has to routinely drain the tank. He sells the excess fuel as part of our national energy dependence initiatives!

Popped up my hill this morning with a full tank and NO odor!
Couldn't believe it, so I went around again a little more aggressively and still no gas smell.

I'm thinking the $5 for the new gas cap was a good investment.

I thought I would put in my two cents worth: I think the gas smell comes from the cap and filler area: loose fitting or vented, plus the tank vent. I think the caps were not vented - hence the little tube. It helped reduce the gas odor in my '61 when I carefully sealed the cover over the tank area with dum-dum (that weird, slightly fiberous, modeling clay-like stuff. It seemed to me that the odor would get sucked in from the filler area via the tank compartment & soft-top well.
