Default oil filled coil

Can/should an oil filled Flame Thrower III coil be mounted to the firewall sideways?

It makes no difference where or how you mount it.

Based on the reports here, they will fail in any position you place them.

In case you didn't guess, I'm one of MANY who have had a Flamethrower die.

So were the ones that failed mounted sideways?
Whats the oil for if not for cooling? Wiring will melt/fuse if the internal coil wire gets hot enough! Worstcase, @12V and 0.32 ohms = ~35amps or >400W that could be dissipated inside the coil housing.
Has anyone cut one apart to see how they are constructed?

The only place they should be mounted is in the trash can. It will leave you stranded!

You don't have to cut them open. My oil and my solid unit split open. One in a matter of minutes (oil) the other after about 2 days. I was on the freeway doing about 75 when it stopped dead!

Pertronix took them both back no questions asked. I now use the stock coil with zero failures.

I've been using an old Accel Super Coil in mine since day one and it hasn't missed a beat. Oh, it's mounted sideways...
