Default Midyear Front Grille Threaded Studs To Replace Rivets

I checked the archives but I couldn't find it .... Awhile back someone listed the part # and photos of a threaded flat headed bolt that can be used in place of the OEM rivets. Anyone have that info ?

I used No 10 Stainless steel A316 socket head cap screws on all the body reinforcing brackets and grill mounting instead of the aluminum rivets. I like the clean look on the underside with these. I also used stainless steel nuts and washers. Use as short of a length as possible so you don't end up with lots of thread showing.

That sounds like the special bolts that Corvette Central sells to attach C1 steering wheel stainless to the painted bell hub.

I think you may be remembering the info in post #7 of this thread:

You got it Davey-Dave, it's that "Rivbolt" that I was thinking of, I should have mentioned that I am looking for these (a total of eight) to attach the grille brackets from the unerhood opening, i.e. the "Grille Mouth" through the front wheel houses. Does anyone here have eight that they would sell ? To me ?

Go to McMaster-Carr online. Here is the link. They come in many sizes and lengths.

Do you have any good weld shops in your area? They might have some on hand that they'd let go.

DZ

Try Grainger in OKC.

I just tried these "Rivbolts" on my front grille brackets and they worked pretty well. Looks like they're also good for securing your Midyear door hinge supports. I had to purchase a group of 100 pcs to get the eight that I needed. That leaves me with 92 of these. Let me know if you need any of these, it appears as though I have a few extras ...

It's just these sort of online comments that forced me to step down from my "Sargent Of Arms" position on the forums.AMCGremlin.forums.com forum.

Are these the same "Rivbolts" that are used on industrial strength hair dryers?

Most industrial strength hairdryers used what is known as a hollow rivet, these were usually peened at the factory requiring a special buck. These molds were used until the early run of the 1967 "Coiffe-A-Rama" model until a factory worker dropped a tool, either a Hamill Bolt-On cap screwdriver or an afro-pick.

That must have been about the same time that big hair dryers started appearing where small hair dryers should have been

I did the same thing to replace missing and damaged rivets. I used stainless elastic lock nuts so they won't ever come loose. These are available at many hardware stores.

I have some more of these, they will also work on the inner door structure at the top of the upper door hinges, different sized rivets were used on A.O. Smith cars if you need them, let me know.
