Default '62 grill color finish

The grills that were painted factory black for the '62, what finish was it? Ie; gloss black, satin, dull, flat? Thanks!

They were black anodized which has an almost satin finish

Thanks for the reply.

When I did my homework I came across a few threads stating that a few were gold anodized most were black anodized and some of the later ones were black painted over anodized silver, possibly old stock from '61? This is what mine appears to be as the silver starting to show through doesn't appear to be raw alum but more anodized silver. So I guess my question is as I restore it with paint or possibly powder coat what finish would most replicate the original finish? I'm leaning towards satin but the old finish looks closer to matte, dull or flat. My guess is that's due to 50 years of weathering.

The grill itself is aluminum.. That's probably what is showing through.

I have a 61 and went through the same issue. I talked to platers and powdercoaters, and neither thought they could do a job that I would be happy with.

So I cleaned and spray painted mine and it came out pretty good.

But with the Black (62), perhaps powder coating would work??? The main concern with the silver was that it would look "dull".

61 and 62 grilles were configured differently. The 61, as pictured, has the large "filled in" section in the center. The 62 does not. So "left-over" 61 grilles were not used in '62.

Being a black car with its glossy finish, its easy to see the softer grill black..ie semi gloss or satin...And a very few cars came with a gold grill. I use to know the accepted reason why a few were so built...I have only seen one in gold and was at the Detroit Autorama

Maybe it was my old car. It was VIN# 2000 and was black/red with gold grill. If anyone has this car I have pictures of it during my restoration in the early 80's.

Doc,
Don't think it was this one. I've owned it 42 years now. It's black over red, F.I. etc Rich

Another one with the gold grill. Not sure if original, but it looks like it and purchased this car in 1970. This shot taken prior to the refresh given to it:

The fellow doing the work on the car (very well respected NCRS c-1 Judge) thought the grill should be black.

Always liked the gold color.
