Default L75 Question

I am very slowly in process of returning my '65 to as near factory original as possible. While at Plastic Fantastic this weekend, a gentleman suggested my aluminum valve covers were not correct. He said all 327/300hp covers were steel in 1965. While having some work done at Corvette Specialty here in So Cal a while back, I had asked if the covers I had were correct. They said they were. However the gentleman I spoke to yesterday seemed very certain.

Whats the real story?

the painted stamped steel valve covers were used on 327/300 cars. the aluminum valve covers were used on the "special high performance" engines as Chevy would call them

Not too surprising to see the finned Aluminum valve covers on the lower horse engines instead of the stamped steel painted valve covers. A lot of owners, myself included, prefer the look of the aluminum covers and not too worried about originality. This is a pic of the L75 327 in my 65 Coupe and you'll also notice the 66-style air cleaner.

Your Corvette Specialty shop appears to have there information wrong

Wondering what else they told you or other Corvette owners what was correct / incorrect?

Curious....Was this just a worker or the owner?

The owner made the statement that they were factory correct for this engine, but I have heard others things since about the shop that isn't motivating me to return. As for my covers, they do have seams that my new Plastic Fantastic friend also identified as being unoriginal and aftermarket.

Thank you for your responses! I appreciate the knowledge that is on these boards

I agree, Mike. But I really want to go back to as original as possible.

The stamped steel valve covers are not hard to find so don't worry. The steel covers can present issues with leakage because of over tightening in the past so make sure they are flat before you install them.

The aluminum covers look nice and don't have the leak issue FWIW and you can bet the Corvette shop knows that the covers are supposed to be steel, they probably misunderstood your question.

Default Another Option - Chrome

These are L79 covers used on passenger cars, now being repro'd.

ps: the funky throttle return spring was necessary due to the idle kick-up solenoid that was added.

What's the hose coming from under the air cleaner for. Or where's it going.

I'm sure you already know the breather is incorrect also.
