I use GM additive only...what other people use is up to them. In many cases I actually add more than 1 bottle of the GM additive.

AS for the gear oil...I use either Valvoline 80w90 or GM's oil.

One of my customers had to change out the gear oil I put in it because he was running the car rather 'spirited' in a the NC mountains where there are some serious roads. And some of these roads gain elevation. 7 degree grade for like 7+ miles if I am not correct. During the up hill climbs...he noticed the rear end was gettign hot and making noise.

He sucked out what I put in and I think he put in 85w140 Lucas oil and since then.,..when he does this hill climb...he says there is NO NOISE.

SO...you may consider that if you plan on driving this car in very hilly areas where you climb elevation for quite a distance.

You are correct. That is the ONLY way to do it. Sometimes I make a mistake by not leaving well enough alone!

I should add that I put a drop of red loctite to the pinion nut too.

Thanks DUB. I don't plan on driving it in any hilly area. Everything is pretty flat here in South Mississippi.

I looked at the ACDELCO 75W-90 on ECKLER's website after I posted this. So is it better to go with 80W-90 than 75W-90?

I've heard LUCAS is good also. Guess I'll see what the local parts place has.

Thanks,
Dex

It is important to not over tighten the pinion nut past the center punch marks IMO. That way the crush sleeve is not affected. You don't want to tighten too far and have to back the nut out even a small amount to maintain the crush sleeve's original depth.

I feel it is and can not hurt. I use the 80W90. It is also what is used in manual transmissions....and I seriously doubt that me using 80W90 in a differential ...versus the 75W90 is causing any harm or significant loss in power if people feel that if it is thicker..it is robbing HP.

I added the oil today. I had it leaning over and some leaked from the vent plug. My question is, is that normal or should I replace the vent plug?

Thanks,

Another question....I went to Advance Auto and they did not have any gear oil or additive, so I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts and they had the below gear oil and additive:

Will this work for my differential? If not, where does everyone buy from?

BTW, Ecklers calls there additive "Positraction Differential Additive" but then says "Most people in our hobby refer to positraction differential additive as limited slip axle lubricant additive, posi fluid and posi lube."

Thanks,

Believe it or not, it's the same as the right side. The picture is very deceitful. I started not to post it because the picture was inaccurate. There's very little play on either side.

Thanks,
Dex

....or find out who makes it for GM. Obviously GM farms out all that lubricant stuff to lubricant companies. You'll pay twice as much at the stealerships.
