enough of this... Purchase a "new" speedometer and switch the lenses and chrome. That's legal. Keep the old one in case you are concerned with CA DMV else sell it.

I think the operative phrase is "intent to defraud". In my case the change in mileage was clearly noted on the bill of sale along with the reason. Also the eBay ad stated the correct mileage.

Some of this reminded me of mid to late '70's Mopar odometers. They had a tiny ink pad that rode against the left most digit. Their attempt to thwart rolling it back.

Strange.

Sorry for drifting off-topic.

they also had 'roll' separators that if the rolls were run backwards the separators would show red.

also they had a sticky coating on the case internals that would show fingerprints if disassembled and touched...

all information from my 'misspent' youth....

In the early '60's, I spent some time as the new car get ready guy in a Pontiac dealership. One of the salesmen had an almost, one year old 421 Catalina demonstrator. It had about 20-25K miles on it and was thrashed every weekend at the drag strip.

One day, I noticed it sitting in the service bay and it had a repair ticket on the dash. Just being nosy, I looked and it said "repair clock". Well, the clock was ticking away with the correct time so I asked a mechanic about it and he told me the salesman was getting ready to get rid of the car and get a new one. The "clock" was actually the odometer I was told.

Back in the "day" a high speed "drill type" machine was used. Today, there are hand held plug ins that can be bought North of the border for less than 300.00 dollars. Always ask for a Accu Check or a Car Fax on any used car purchase...We bought a 2011 Duramax for inventory a couple years ago from a major auction house in Portland, odo read 39xxx miles. When we ran the Accu Check it showed that the last time the vehicle went thru emmissions check in Or, it had 270xxx miles on it. Even the auction house was duped, and had to buy back the rig, they in turn went after the party that had brought the rig in for the auction sale...It was then I heard of these hand held devices for modern vehicles...All Big 3 dealers go to auction houses to stock their used car inventory, it is not from trade-ins for most part. It is common for a big store to buy 50-60 vehicles from auction a week...just part of the cycle.

Back to the OP, I would make sure to keep all records and enjoy the car and not do a thing.

Yea, I'm just going to leave alone and if I ever have a need to remove cluster, will adjust then. I've worked on several C1 speedometers, even changed out the mileage indicator so hopefully 63 will be like C1's.

I'd actually rather pull a C1 cluster than a C2...in any case you could write what you think is the original mileage on some blue painters tape with a Sharpee and stick it on the back of the cluster just so the next owner (or you) don't forget the facts.... Then I wouldn't let it worry me for two seconds more...

Remove the tumbler/shaft/dials/mylar place holder from the speedometer head. Put the numbers where you want them being careful not to break the mylar anti-tamper place holder. Re-install assembly into speedo head.

A bit off topic but I wonder how many GM warranty repairs were done on cars 'rolled back' to stay within the warranty mileage limits ?

Look - all this stuff is software now....if a program runs it, a program can change it...
Not even remotely surprising it exists...
