Default Another rebody of a 1969 Corvette Coupe(PICS)

We took this 69 corvette in for a full frame off restoration. After we sanded the body, we realized that when another shop had painted it about 15 yrs ago, the idiot sanding it had sanded through every edge on the body and filled the cracks with bondo. (he must have thought it was a steel car) A complete rebody was necessary. Our customer decided on a one piece front and one piece rear clip. Notice the body gaps. This is the one and only chance to get it perfect if you are doing this to your own corvette.

Enjoy.

Great work man. If I were closer you'd be my new body man.

You would probably change your mind about that if you found out what it costs to heat this 5K sq ft shop in the winter!

Yeah I am sure...mine is about 1800sq/ft and I hate that even using LP gas. I can't imagine how much it cost for 5000!

At our shop each job costs exactly what it takes to get the job done on each particular car. Everything is done by the hour,so needless to say no two cars come in at the same price. To give you a rough idea,a frame off restoration on a vette such as this one that needs extensive rebuilding(we get all the beauties)can be a little pricey.(A car like this one is worse case scenario. Most dont require nearly as much work)

As my wife said after seeing some of our projects:
You shouldnt say you do corvette restoration but corvette RESCUE!!!

You work is great! I wish I could be that talented one day!

It looks as if those you put on one piece front clips on both the front and the back. What was problem with the fiberglass already on the car?

never mind the question... I got picture happy and didn't read what you posted.

Can you tell me the pros & cons of switching to one piece front & rear ends opposed to keeping the original fiberglass. I suppose one con would be not having GM glass on your car, but I am interested in the quality.

The previous owner replaced body panels during frame-off as shown below...replacing entire front/rear clips sure looks easier/cleaner,though...

On the good side your work is really outstanding!

On the bad side, I am now thinking of removing the body of my vette so that I can get to the bird cage and after seeing your pics is looks possible.

Moving to Calirfonia any time soon?

Very nice work. It's nice to see that people still car about the quality of work they put out.

I'll bet the bill on that car is close to a new Corvette

To answer mr rihwoods, The yellow car I see in those pics was done correctly. The only reason we did what we did to that car was that someone had previously sanded through 80% of the cars' edges ,pretty much rendering the whole car useless. When we can save the original glass, we always do.

Luckily I live near his shop and have seen some of his work. He's definitely meticulous about everything. His body work and paint jobs are awesome.

You can always ship the car .

As far as taking the body off your car, it certainly is possible. Some jobs are a pain in the butt, however that is the price you pay for knowing that you did the job right. If your vette has birdcage issues its best to fix them right. No sense in fixing the top and leaving the underneath .It will always come back to haunt you.

I start these threads to show people what can be done and how involved it may be.Then everyone can make up their own mind if they are up to the challenge. At least you get an idea of what it takes. The way I figure, The more info you have the better off you are. And it isnt like you get to see stuff like this every day.

Sharing our knowledge with each other is a big part of what the hobby is all about as far as I am concerned.

RRV,
I've looked at the 'before' photo and I can't see what you're referring to when you say..."sanded through the edges". So I'm curious what you mean?
Regards,
Alan

How can you tell if your front/rear is original glass?
Is the aftermarket panels or complete 1 piece a different thickness? more flexible?
My entire front end seems very thin in material, I can push the top hood side of my front fenders and it dips in like plastic.
Just curious if there is a way to determin if you've got original glass or repro.

Nice work
