spare tire carrier - curious question
My car was apparently undercoated when it was new. I guess that's a good thing cause there's no rust on the car. But, when they did it they sprayed the spare tire carrier w/undercoating. I was just wondering if the spare tire carrier is supposed to have the undercoating on it, or if I should remove it for originality. What's correct?

That undercoating applicator must have been fun to use because whoever did my car looked like he was having a fun time doing it.
Either that or he was a new guy trying to do a real good job.
That stuff is every where! And thick.

Or, try to remove it. If it's a "beach" to remove, it was probably factory or dealer applied.

Hi,
I believe the only undercoating applied in St. Louis was just a quick spray in the rear of the 4 wheel wells, and a little on the upper/inner surface of the rear wheel wells on the reinforcing plate for the shoulder harness bolt. It was really there for sound deadening.
I believe the undercoating was applied after exterior painting and black-out were finished.
Regards,
Alan

Dealer options
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but other than the wheel wells as Alan said I believe the full body undercoating was a dealer only option.
I think the same goes for the luggage rack on the rear deck and passenger side mirror.

Boy, y'all have some nice cars. Thanks for the pics. I'm gonna go ahead and labor thru removing that junk off the tire carrier. Paint the metal frame a simi-flat black and leave the glass unpainted. That should do...
Thanks again for all the comments. VERY educational!

Hi dw,
I found that after cleaning all the goop off the fiberglass tub, (try not to scratch the fiberglass), putting a couple of light coats of semi-gloss clear on the tub looks very nice against the semi-flat black strap, if you're looking for an 'original' appearance.
Regards,
Alan
