Default 1971 valve cover question

Hi, I have a 1971 with a 270 hp engine with an auto trans. My car came with chrome valve covers from the last owner. My question is which valve covers did my car come with originally. Aluminum or orange colored steel? thanks

Steel painted orange (or commonly referred to as Chevy Red).

The L-48 (350/270) came with stamped steel, orange painted valve covers. The 71 L-48 covers differ from later L-48 covers, in that they use a black rubber push in oil cap, instead of the later twist on oil cap.

Only the LT-1 came with finned aluminum covers in 71.

Hi 2001,
There are more than a few variations of the steel valve covers around.
The 71 base engine's covers had 1 hole and no clips on the right-side cover, and 2 holes and 1 wire clip on the left-side cover.
I believe others will certainly work, but you may want to look for those configurations.
Regards,
Alan

Are the 73-74 covers different?

I have a couple sets of those left over.

Same question with a 77. Anyone know what the stock covers look like? Pic would be great too.
