All those years are late C3's or C4's that are probably 'daily driver' cars that someone wanted to 'joy-ride' in. They certainly aren't stolen for their 'parts' like they were 30 years ago.

The cars of higher value are probably not left on the street/parking lots unattended. And, maybe the "most stolen" cars are ones that are dumped by the owners for the insurance money....

That's 7 of the top 10 are C3's... So much for them there fancy alarm systems..

Moral of teh story: Don't drive a C3 in California?

7T1 is right though, the high dollar C2's and 1's wouldn't like be left unattended for long. Thanks for sharing the story.

I know my insurance company requires my car to be stored in a garage. I agree with 7T1 that the more valuable cars are kept on a shorter leash.

I wonder if most of those thefts were when the cars were new.

I think the most stolen Corvette would have to be a 1973 with right hand drive, so you can talk to the ladies while you cruise. I know one that got stolen twice within a few days!

Question to the Brain Trust:

I have a rally drive from Fredericksburg (VA) to Warrenton (Northern VA) coming up. About 50 miles.

Immediately after, my wife and I have an all night photo-shoot in Georgetown (DC), which is another 30 miles away. I was planning on driving my Vette. We're returning the next day whenever we wake up.

In that circumstance, I'd have to park it overnight at a Hotel, probably by Valet. Unknown if the Valet service has it in a garage or not, but most parking is structured in Georgetown, so I'd suspect it would be in a garage. By that I mean covered and access controlled.

Do I sound off my rocker by doing this for one night? Mine is a 1970 with angry sidepipes...so I'd know if it blew past me on the streets of Georgetown during my photo shoot...

The article says that they are the figures from 1981 through 2011.

Based on that, it makes perfect sense that the model years between 76 and 85, had the highest number of thefts.

Those years had some of the highest annual production totals, so there were plenty of them around, and the alarm systems in them, were pretty rudimentary. Later years, with the VATS system, were much harder to steal, and generally there were fewer built, so there were fewer to steal.

I agree. I followed the link and actually read the NICB stuff, including their spread sheets. Still comes down to essentially meaningless numbers.

Sooooo...what do I do? No overnight trips? Ever? I'm already too far out to swap cars. That's just silly.

I could not go on the cruise, but if it is a pretty day, there isn't any reason NOT to go on the cruise. It's a "Mohitos and Tapas" late lunch with 20+ other Corvettes. Hate to miss it.

Self park? Most of the hotels in Georgetown and DC don't even have that option.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread...it is a little related in that I've never left my car anywhere but my garage overnight and would like a clue as to how folks handle this situation.

I can leave my '72 vert top down anywhere, and the only thing that outright steals it is a hook, the ordinary thieves can sure make a mess, but they not getting the car.....

my security system is by ME, and wired so complicated, NO PRO car thief can drive it away.....not even with 30 minits of trying....

I baby sit my 75 at the corvette club meeting through the window, despite being parked between a couple of C6's.

Statistics like these always make me laugh. CA and FL have large populations (people and cars) and lots of sunny days. I live in the Silicon Valley where many people are stupid rich. There are so many Vettes, Porsches, Ferraris etc around here. Heck some kid up in Napa stole a Lambo owned by one of the tv chefs (Guy Ferari?)... And the 49ers like old Vettes, I think the Raiders steal them from the 9ers.
