It's on the other side of the tire. I had the same problem with my BF Goodrich T/A's from 2005 and had to crawl under with a flashlight and find it. It sits next to the DOT stamp and the last two numbers are the year.....at least the last two numbers on mine were 05.

Tire date codes were THREE digits through 1999. They became FOUR digits starting in 2000..

If you have a three digit tire on a car, take it off immediately. It is at least 15 years old..

Here is a picture of as four digit date code.

Earlier tires had the date codes on one side only, usually the inside. Recent rule changes require the date code on both sides of the tire. Tires have been marked with date codes since 1968.

If you all want a real education of the dangers associated with this issue. google "aging tires".

The number of fatalities is sobering; not to mention the damage to vehicles.

Just by the looks of the sidewall alone I think I'd want to change them.

The date code for tires made prior to 2000 is a three digit date code. Tires made after 1999 have a 4 digit date code. BF Goodrich web site also confirms this information.

So, it is one of three things...
a date of 12 97 (12th week of 1997)
a date of 29 7 (29th week of year ending in 7 (1977, 1987, 1997)
a mistake in the date code, which could be 12 07 (12th week of 2007).

In any event, the weather cracks on the side wall are enough reason to get them off of the car.

They're Goodyears and new tyres ordered today. It won't be going anywhere until they're replaced.

I'm not sure that's the date code and would keep looking. For fun, can you post a pic of the front face of the tire?

While those are not the original tires, they look like very old service replacements that might predate standardized DOT markings

Have a look here

http://www.ebay.com/itm/G60-15-ORIGI...-/370579147680

where a guy is selling claimed original tires. Beginning of the date code is similar to yours.

Alternatively, you might want to consider contacting Kelsey and ask if these might be some of their repro tires and what the date code translates to.

Darn, mine have a date code of 2202, over 12 years old. I will need to get new tires before the 2015 driving season. Thanks for this thread that prompted me to check my date codes!

Unless your car is parked for the season, change them now. Better safe than sorry.

OK, based on some info I found on Mustang sites about date coding Goodyear Polyglas tires, I am petty sure that your tires are dated 29th week of 1977. Also they were manufactured at the Akron II, Ohio plant.

Hi emccomas.

Your research is correct and is confirmed in an email today from Kelsey as suggested by Mike above.

So anyone else driven more than 300 miles on 37 year old tyres then ?

I spent pretty much my whole life in the tire biz and this is how DOT or serial numbers work. A 10 digit number means the tire was made prior to Dec 31, 1999. The last 3 digits tell you the week and year of manufacture. ie 398 would mean the 39th week of 1998, 1988 or 1978. ( no way to differentiate the year)
If the tire was made on or after Jan 1, 2000 it will have a 11 digit code. The last 4 digits are the week and year of build. ie 4110 would mean 41st week of 2010.
The whole theory of aged tires being a hazard to you, your car and the surroundings is still much like climate change. Believe what you are comfortable with. Because no what you believe someone will have a picture, story, or example to prove you right or wrong.
My rule of thumb has always been if you are concerned for whatever reason change them, as there is no actual right or wrong other than if they look like bad they probably are. Hope this helps
