Default stamped starter worth keeping?

I replace my old starter with a gm mini starter and I was wondering if it's worth keeping or if I should turn it in as a core.

It's stamped 1108743 4B 6 3

I did some searching and didn't come up with much. I found one thread that said it was correct for a 427 4 speed. But the date codes in the thread didn't match up with what I have.

Here is where I found it listed. If you click on the chassis diagram it brings it up as a 66-68 427 w/hd. But that's the only place I can find it and it doesn't say what car it's for.

This is the only other place on the Web I could find anything about a starter with this part number but they are talking about zl1 camaros.

If you read the description for the 1108743 starter in the parts book link, it says the motor itself is stamped 1108381. 1108743 is the part number to order a complete starter motor and solenoid switch assembly, and is not the motor number. Sometimes GM's parts numbering can get confusing, especially if your not familiar with it. Numbers on a part, aren't always the same as catalog part numbers, especially when the part is an assembly made up of multiple parts.

The 1108381 was the OEM starter for only the 70-72 ZR-1. The catalog in the link is from 1981, and by that time GM was using the "381" as a "service replacement" for 427 4 speed H.D. (L-88, LS-6, etc) applications. This was because they all used the same bell housing/flywheel combination.

I don't have anything identifying what the original application for a starter stamped 1108743 would be, but I can decipher the date for you. "4" would be the year (74, 84 or maybe even 94), "B" would be February, "6" is the day of the week, and "3" is the 3rd shift.

Ok thanks. Yea there was alot of numbers on there... I don't know how these ncrs guys do it. So I'm thinking I'll just turn this starter in for the $35 core. I appreciate the help.

Starters are relatively easy to repair...as long as the electrical portion is still intact. And the original starters are better made than modern repops. If you don't want to repair it, take it to a starter/alternator shop and ask the to check it over, install new brushes...and bearings, if necessary...and bring it back up to 'snuff'.
