Default Vin search

I recently lost a friend who owned several Corvettes over the years. His widow gave me his "collection" of Corvette News magazines from the 1970's and, while sorting through them, I found the original window sticker from a 1977 Corvette he purchased new in December 1976. I would like to send this to the current owner, if the car still exists. Does anyone know how I might go about such a search?

Best place I can think of to try.
And, great of You to think of the owners.

We have a thread in the Sticky section at the top of the main page called ORPHAN VIN Stamped parts and documents... we use this to try to reunite cars and their original Stamped parts and docs.

Please post the VIN of the car and your info in that thread and maybe the owner will see it.

You can also do a google search of the VIN to see if it pops up anywhere.

Run the VIN through NMVTIS (Google it). www.add123.com works well for me.

Good Luck,

Thanks. Managed to find current owner through local police dept. who did a registration check, then contacted the owner who called me. Mailed him the window sticker. Happy camper.

Hi MM,
That turned out really well!
The current owner got the window sticker AND the identity of a former owner…I'll bet he was surprised and pleased!
Well Done!
Regards,
Alan

Wow.. that has privacy law violation written all over it. I know the police would tell me to pound sand if I asked them to do something like that for me.

Mike, It's really cool of you to go the extra mile to get this document to the current owner! Even cooler that you knew that there's an interest in these papers.

Even though your intentions in this case were to the benefit of the current owner, hasn't there been some invasion of privacy? I mean the local PO provided you with this person's private contact information? You must know this PO pretty well?

The police contacted the current owner and gave the current owner Mike Main's contact information. The current owner then had the choice of either contacting Mike Main or not.

it is still an ownership trail that the OP now has that he can carry forward to future owners.

opens up a slew of scenarios where liability/fraud/shoddy repairs/wrecks etc. can be found out thruout the ownership trail... things that can devalue a car or be litigated.

A LEO accessing this information for personal / private means could subject them to disciplinary action, regardless of the reasons.

These inquiries are supposed to be for official use only.

Your LEO friend has dodged a bullet.

Good grief! People complain even when someone tries to do something nice.

In this case " something nice" is almost always a violation of department policy and / or the law.

Asking a LEO to "run a number as a favor" is not doing the LEO any favors. Many LEOs have lost their jobs over things like this.

Many departments now require a case number / reason for the search when it is done. No good reason is grounds for discipline.
