Default Alternators and TPI

Can I use the stock alternator from a 77 Vette to run TPI?

Sure. What did you think would be the problem?

What is the output of the 77 alternator? What accessories are you running on the 77? I think stock tpi f-bodies ran 105 amp alternators. The b4c police special cars ran 140 amp alternators. The alternator has to put out as much power as the car's electrical load demands plus a little extra to charge the battery. If you are going to run electric fans for the cooling system, that adds a little to the draw. A/c will also add to the current draw. I doubt if the electronic fuel injection system of a tpi really draws all that much power, but the ecu is very sensitive to low voltage. Like any computer, it demands a good solid 12 volts at all times.

In addition to the TPI I will have the dual fan set up off the GTA, AC, and an aftermarket stereo plus 100 watt amp. I average 14.4 volts but that drops when I roll down the windows, or at night when the headlights are on. The stock alternator puts out 63 amps @ 12 volts (I think).

I use an alternator from an 85 Vette on mine. I do have electric fans. In my truck I used the stock alternator, but stock fan. I would want at least 100 amps with electric fans.
