Comp Cams Magnum 280h
Has any of you ever used a Comp Cams Magnum 280H in a big block chevy? If so how did it perform and idle( smooth or lopey)?

I have one in my small block. Lopey idle, low vacuum but enough to operate all accesories with no problem. In a big block with anything more than a low compression engine it would probably be considered a mild cam.

I had this cam in a 396 BBC punched .090" over. Idled at about 850-900 RPM, had a very lopey idle...
BTW, the top end of the engine was essentially an L-88 setup, but I ran 8.5:1 Compression ratio. Had an M-21 4-speed, and a 3.90 Ford 9" Detroit locker in the back...
How did it perform? Well, I had to feather the clutch when pulling away from stop-lights, or the tires would simply break traction... the rear tires were 275-60/R17, the biggest meats I could fit without chopping the fender-wells, and the thing was a screamer, a serious handful to drive... it was a little soggy below about 2500-2700 RPM, but after that, it'd spin up FAST...
BTW, I had NO problems with the power brakes...
I think you'll like it...

I'm running flat top pistons, do you guys thing I would have any problems with piston to valve clearance if i went with the 284H over the 280H? Its just something about that lobey idle that just drives me wild.

you should check the piston to valve clearance, I know the 280 doesn't clear a .100" dome, so on flats make sure you have good valve springs, the 284, I doubt you'll get away with without some shaving.
