Survey:Preferred motor oil and grade???
Hi,
What's the best motor oil for a performance motor? High compression? Low compression? Big block? Small block?
synthetic/non-synthetic?
Please name your brand and grade.

In the Phoenix heat, and in my crappy low oil pressure haven 95,000 mile L-48, I run Mobil1 10w40.
I will run Mobil1 10w30 in the new motor after it is broken in. I will use either Regular Valvoline or Mobil (non-synthetic) until then.

Hey, this looks like a good thread for a "POLL"!!!
Why not ask "What's the worst oil?" and "Why?"
I'm guessing that one major name brand dino-oil is pretty much as good as the next. Changeout frequency is more important than brand name.
Mobil 1 synthetic IS definetly a superior product (based on tolerances) but to what extent are the benefits actually utilized by the average driver?
Equally important is "Which oil filter is best?"

After I got mine rebuilt the engine builder said 20W50 after it was broken in. I tried that once
change the oil when it was a little cooler outside and the stuff would barely flow out of the
drain pan. It was like molsasis.
I think any name brand 10W40 is good enough.

Is there really a difference...maybe btw weights and syn vs nonsyn....but otherwise I usually buy what is on sale 10w-40 in winter and 20w50 in summer

I use Valvoline 141 (10-40). Tried Mobil 1 only once. It was just as dirty and contaminated as dino oil after 3000 miles so I decided Mobil 1 was not cost effective for me. I couldn 't argue with the results. So I switched back to dino oil. The engine now has 220,000 miles on it. I change the oil every 3000 miles.

20W50 recommended by engine builder, Castrol GTX or Pennzoil. Use 10W30 for the soon upcoming storage season. Regular oils not synthetic.

Valvoline 10w-30 or 20w-50 (switch according to outside temps). No synthetics.
Also, AC PF-35L filter.
If you are breaking in a new motor or cam, add GM Engine Oil Supplement
E. O. S., p/n 1052368.

Castrol GTX 10w30 for fall and winter storage/nice day only drives. Over the summer I use the 10W40 by Castrol.
I always use the AC Delco PF35 (long) instead of the PF 25 filter. I change the oil and filter every 3000 or 6 months.
I have been reading up on the Amsoil products, anyone use this or have any comments on them? I also have given thought to switching to Wix or Hastings filters any comments ?

Re: Survey:Preferred motor oil and grade??? (marky mark)
I use straight 30wt Valvoline. The temps never get cold enough to worry about the viscuosity, and under extreme conditions (high heat, loads or RPM), multi-grades can foam. Granted, my street car doesn't see these extremes much, so I could probably run most anything. In the race cars, we always ran Redline 50wt synthetic.

Castrol GTX 10 w 30 all the time. My car sits alot and I read that synthetics are not good for cars that sit alot of the time. It runs off quicker. I also change my oil at least every 2-300 miles and run it through one of my other vehicles.
