As far as I'm aware there was no L82 option in 81, all were L81 engines in all 50 states. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

The L82 was the optional small block used from 73 till 80. The '81 Vette only had one engine, no options. This engine was the L81 which used a computer to control the carb. 82 got the "CrossFire" computer controled injection engine.

Yes, the only engine in 1981 was the L-81, rated at 190hp. Unlike 1980, when the 350 could not be sold in California (a 305 was offered), the L-81 met California emission specs. So it was a 50-State engine. By comparison, the L-82 engine in 1980 was rated at 230hp.

Everybody is correct. I pulled out one of my 81 brochures. The only engine code is L-81 available with automatic or four speed. 190 bhp. :chevy

Yes, only L81 in '81, but to take an L81 motor up to the L82 standard (apart from the 4 bolt mains?) would be to increase the CR & change the cam (as long as the ECU is happy with it). As the L81 has alloy intake manifold & factory "headers", are these the only mods that would be needed?

L81 was all that was available, I guess we know that though. Of course, take that L81 and put in a different cam and a set of true duals that flow real well and you're not at 190hp anymore. Of course, this takes a tiny bit of carb tweaking, but nothing major. Now stay tuned for my air cleaner ???'s right after these commercial messages.
