Wiper door vacuum problems
#21
Just a note. I also had an erratic idle problem and went through all the vac leaks, throttle settings, etc. Finally found the distributor shaft had too much end (up/down) play. It'd actually change the timing due to the gearing and cause the engine to idle fast or slow. I rebuilt the distributor and all is fine now.

hey vetteguy, did you get the pinching thing figured out? Mine was doing that as well and I noticed a screw had been placed in the vent hose of the safety control valve (under the right wiper), once screw was removed and the valve adjusted to close more when the wipers are down, this issue did not happen to me anymore.

"Distributor End Play Causes Timing Fluctuations" is another urban myth. As the camshaft turns the dynamic forces of the camshaft gear turning the distributor gear cause the distributor shaft to be forced UP against the thin steel thrust washer (at the bottom of the shaft). The distributor can have an 1/8" end play and still maintain perfect timing because of those dynamic forces. Removing the end play doesn't hurt anything but it also doesn't help anything.

Hi fcb,
WELCOME! First Post!
The problem you describe generally has to do with the position (adjustment) of the wiper door interlock switch. It's purpose is to insure that the right side wiper is fully down and parked before the door begins to close so the door doesn't close on and trap the wiper arm or blade as you describe.
Check it's adjustment using the 2 bolts that attach it to it's bracket in the wiper well.
The short arm attached to the wiper transmission pushes on the plunger of the interlock switch…. moving the switch 'down' makes the wiper arm need to be further closed before the plunger is fully pushed.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Burning Brakes
What is the best way to get one unstuck when it is trapped in the wiper door?

Thanks, I can get the door up but now the wiper wont return to the down position. I saw this happen on a friends car a while ago. i can't track him down to find out what he did. Thanks again

Pull your override switch so the door is up. Turn the wipers on and than off and they should return to the down position. Close the override switch to close the wiper door.
