Default Gmpp zz383

Just picked up a GMPP#12498772 ZZ383 for my 1971 roadster with power steering. Has anyone on the forum put one of these strokers from GM into a C-3. Was wondering about the mods I will need to make on engine before I install it. Need to replace long waterpump. Should I be looking for a replacement oil pan? Any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

re-use... the stuff from your 71 small block. I would get a edelbrock short water pump...they work really good. the New oil pan should work also.

ww:
good choice on ZZ383.
suggest you do Not get a short pump ... short most likely will Not align w/ your 71 "vette" pulleys & brackets ( including ps pump & alt etc). Get a vette-specific pump for 71 ... a 71 came w/ vette specific pump ... it's a little bit longer than short. Both Weiand and Stewart make 71 "vette" aluminum pumps ... maybe edelbrock too. New ZZ pan should be ok.

Go to this page and click on engine installation guide. It will give you a great deal of info on your engine. It's in pdf format so you can save it and print it out to use as guide on install.

Jeebus, I not heard the term 'idler' in decades now, that is the harmonica balancer up front....the one the pulleys attach too....

and I have NO comment about any differences and why it would need changed/altered/replaced or the frame altered....

I put this ZZ383 engine in a muscle car and the harmonic balancer diameter is quite larger than avg. The plastic timing chain cover is consdiderign replacing prior to install. Timing the engine really sucks with this cover as the marker is cast into the plastic and nearly impossible to see. I haven't been able to find a marker tab that bolts onto this cover assembly. D-port heads so do your research on headers that fit & accomodate these. The large diameter harmonic balancer makes it difficult for short water pump accessory brackets to work. Do your research on that if you plan to go short pump and re-use your PS bracket. You definitely will need the vortec style manifold - don't use the olds style w/the vortec heads. It will bolt up but the ports don't align well. Timing the eng. requires less total than your avg. hi-po SB so pay attention to recomendations there. This is due to fast-burn head efficiency.
