Default 1978 Corvette Exhaust tube size questions

What is the difference between the L48 and L82 exhaust?

It seams that the rear "Y" pipe on the L48 is 2 1/4" and L82 is 2 1/2".

Can the L82 Exhaust be placed on a L48 car?

Can performance be gained by replacing the 30 year cat with a newer version?

I just finshed putting in 2.5" (which was listed for the L82) in my 78 L48, complete from the manifolds to the mufflers, everything fit perfect (even though it was the Y before). Then put headers on and had the muffler shop tie them in with mandrel bends... nice free flowing exhaust... I assume a gain in hp vs the y-pipe 2.25 system.

Yes and yes. The L82 2 1/2' diameter system will fit; and definitely replace the old pancake cat with a new 2 1/2 or 3'' Magnaflow cat (Summit Racing has a good price.} I suspect there will be slight power gains, but ya really gotta rebuild that L48 with new heads, cam and more for a seat of the pants diffrence.

My 78 L-82 4spd with the original motor and 63,000 miles originally had the stock 2.5 y pipe and cat. After 25 years of tinkering with the exhaust, cat test pipe, aftermarket OEM mufflers, etc, I decided about 5 years ago to go to a 2.5 in true duals through the frame, Monza Turbo mufflers, and McJacks shorty headers in stages which is the final system today. The difference in power, sound and engine temperature is beyond belief! The original 2.25 or 2.5 y pipe cat exhaust is VERY restrictive and robs mucho power whether an L-48 or in my case an L-82. A highly efficient 2.5 in true dual exhaust with free flowing mufflers and some sort of header (versus the stock exhaust manifolds which are not too bad) could easily yield 30 horsepower. Eliminating the cat or the addition of a high flow cat along with non restrictive mufflers ( or monza tips with the high flow cat) with a 2.5 y pipe system will definitely yield results that you can feel from my real world experience.

Default 78 Corvette

I have been looking at the following items on Summit Racing to replace the 2-1/4" system on my 78 L-48.

Would this be an acceptable system?

Dynomax Performance 19465 - The 1978-81 Chevrolet Corvette cat-back exhaust systems include a set of Super Turbo mufflers, a Y-pipe, polished tips and dual 2.5-in. exhaust aluminized, mandrel-bend piping. Price is about $245.

MagnaFlow 93426 Converter - Direct fit 2-1/2" flange. Price around $135
