I did mine CW with a drill hooked to a priming shaft I got from Summit. You could actually feel the drill get stiff and slow down as the pressure build up.

Yes, the distributor gear runs off the cam. You need to turn the oil pump clockwise seen form the top. A couple of tips:
1. Have an assistant turn the crankshaft over while you spin the oil pump with your drill motor. The lifters only allow oil to flow "through" them at a certain position in their "stroke." So if you want to get oil up to the top of the engine, the lifters must go through a full "stroke" in their bores. I turn my engines over several revolutions while turning the oil pump to assure that oil is gietting all the way up to the rocker arms.
2. Screw an oil pressure gauge into the 1/8" pipe plug hole where the oil pressure sending unit normally goes. This will allow you to verify oil pressure while turning the pump. Using a drill motor, you should be able to produce about 40 pounds of oil pressure. I had a brand new pump installed in an engine a while ago, and it only produced 15 pounds of pressure. Turns out, the pump was bad. I sure am glad I had a pressure gauge in the motor while I was priming the pump, or I would have installed the engine in the car with a bad pump..!

I just made a primer out of an old chevy distributor, not a vette distributor. remove the end gear and cut off the top plate where the weights sit. I turned the end down to fit a 3/8" chuck but if you have a 1/2" chuck it'll work as is. I had an old distributor around here but you should be able to find one pretty cheap at a swap meet, flea market, etc. Last months CHP had an article on making tools at home and covered this.
