Rear main seal: Offset or not?
Purchased Felpro no. BS 40013. Instructions say to offset the two
halves of the seal by 3/8".
I also purchased a GM oil seal no. 10121044 in which the illustration
in the instructions shows the seal installed flush in the block and
the bearing cap.
Which is the best way?

IMHO, offset with a dab of grease on the ends where they butt.
FWIW, it's OK to ask more than one related question per thread.

If you look close at the channel on the back of the seal(s), you'll see a little rib. Anyway you elect to install that seal, if you slice that rib off, it's going to leak.

I offset, and have not had leaks.

GM "Nascar" seal from Scroggin Diskey installed with no offset and no leaks, until 6 years later. Now she has very slight leak, not enough for me to do anything yet.
Also I have always heard to keep the seal end mating surfaces dry. Once they become wet, with grease or oil, it becomes a fluid path and will develop a seal leak early on.
