Default Check Engine Light on 82

My check engine light has started to come on. Car runs fine. Isn't there a way to turn the ignition on and off and get the check engine light to flash the codes? Don't have a tool for checking.

The Data Link plug and short out A and B with a paper clip. Turn the key on and it will flash the codes. Code 13 first and then any trouble codes.

Sorry, I Meant code 12.

need to pull codes from connector under ashtray. i beleive u put a jumper between the top two terminals on the right side. it will flash codes. #12 is a test to make sure the light works. then count the flashes. example 1 flash-pause-3 flashes is code 13, etc.

a unfolded paper clip works best because the connector is deep under the ashtray .

Its the two pins closest to the driver side. They are marked "A" and "B". Its not the pins on the right.

Stick the paper clip in. Turn the ignition on but don't start the car. It will flash "12" three times. Then codes come. It will flash "12" three more times when the test is finished. Code 12 is one flash....pause....then two faster flashes....

Thats what I finally remembered.

Took it across the street to a shop by my office where we have repairs done sometimes. Did a check with a tool. Code 42, EST circuit grounded. They said it really doesn't have any effect and there was actually a TSB years ago on by-passing the EST. Did not have time to do it, however. Is is hard to do on my own? Can't find any info by googling.

Whatever testing the shop did, the car now does not throw off a code. 40 mile drive home and no code. I love this car!

i also have a 82 and love it. I got this little key that connects the 2 terminals for free at Auto Zone, makes it a little easyer then using a paper clip

Hey, I made my paper clip with a small piece of tubing across the top because I thought I might shock myself. Shows you how stupid I am! But that was a long time ago. I am smart now.

A wire could have rattled. Or a connector could have shifted. Look at the wires going into the distributor on the passenger side they go to the HEI module.Or you can jump ahead and spend $80 and change the HEI module.

After shop checked it out and pulled the 42 code (EST grounded), and said it could wait to fix (it was the end of the day), check engine light went out and stayed out for the 40 mile drive home. We'll see what happens.
