Default 71 Vette wiper door issues

I have a 71 vette and I've got some issues with my wiper system. When I first got the car NOTHING worked, headlights, wiper, vacuum system, etc. I have replaced nearly every component, the headlights work (YEAH) but I still have issues with the wipers.

I replaced the hoses, wiper door actuator relay valve, the check valve, filter, wiper motor, wiper fluid pump, wiper door actuator, wiper door vacuum switch (on firewall) and several other components.

My problem is that when I start the car, the wiper door opens. If I turn ON the wiper switch, the door closes. Turn the wiper switch off, the door opens. I have tracked and feel comfortable I have all the hoses on the correct way. I still cannot get the wiper motor to work either.

In addition, the manual over ride switch does not effect what happens either way.

Any suggestions ???

Regards,

Ronnie

Ronnie,

Have you verified the hoses on the wiper relay? For the system to work backwards you almost have to have a hose on something switch. The yellow and green hoses may be on in the wrong position either at the relay or at the wiper actuator.

Free Vacuum Schematics can be found at this link.

I will check this tomorrow, THANK YOU. One other question, would this also disable the over ride switch if I had those lines reversed ?

Default 71 wiper door issue

THANKS ! I replaced the one in the fender and the one in the wiper cowl under the right wiper arm. I am going to check my hose routing again. Hopefully I can get this nightmare finished soon ! Thanks for your help.

No, I'd leave the over-ride alone for now until you are sure you have the hoses on the correct ports.

Here is another page that might help you too.. I forgot to post this one yesterday.
Small parts and how they Operate!

Default wiper door

no if you reverse the hoses in the switches under the dash , nothing happens....
leave the one under the right wiper alone, for now, just replkace the rlay or test it. there are several steps to test, you can actually blow thru it and it either holds air or it doesnt. good luck jeff

Default wiper door

PS
test the vacuum actuator relays... that is the culprit 99.99% theres a diaphram iside that fails occasionally and unexpectedly. it has the three (3) hoses on the black lower section anr one on the metal portion
good luck

The first thing I would do in your case (other than match your hoses to the Willcox diagram)
is to remove the small hose at the wiper relay with the engine running and see what action you get.
If removing the hose makes the wiper door close then you have the green and red hoses reversed at the relay.

I would be very interested in how you had the hose connected incorrectly to produce the scenario you posted , it would help members in the future.
