283 swap

283 swap
now that I have my garage done im gonna tear into the vette. I have a couple questions before i get started, I have an 80 and the motor is tired also the tranny leaks from the front seal. I bought a 283 that has been worked to a 307 and was wondering if it would fit right in, motor mounts and everything. I also was planning on converting to side pipes and was wondering the easiest way to do that. What else would be recommended to do with the original tranny? it seems to be fine except for the leak. Any help is appreciated, thanks TJ

The 283/307 will fit in same as a 350. All the same externally.

It will give you decent gas mileage as well. if its an auto you may as well go to a 700R4.
I saw a guy once with a nice 71 LT1, he popped the hood and there was a 305 2bbl in there, he had the LT1 motor out for rebuilding and just wanted to cruise around in the Vette for a while before putting it away for restoration

It may fit depending on what year 283 you have. Real early ones did not have side motor mounts on them, check your block to see if it has them, if so NP's then.
Should also say that the heads on a lot of 283's do not have bolts holes in them for your alt. and such, check that out also.
