Setting timing on my 81. Need specs and timing light recomendations
I need to check my timing but cant find the specs on it. Also how do I set it as I think the computer adjusts the advance - do i just set the initial or is there more to it? Also I will be buying a timing light - any recomendations? I dont know if I need a fancy one since I dont know what can be adjusted on the distributer. Thanks.

The instructions are on the emmision sticker under the hood. You can also find the idle setting procedure here to.
you need to disconnect the 4 wire connector from the distributor, them start the car and set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC (I think, could be 6) stop the car, then reconnect the connector for the distributor. And that's it.

Re: Setting timing on my 81. Need specs and timing light recomendations (stickboy)
Stickboy has it down. Depending on whether or not you are stock (or even if you are) it might not hurt to advance your base a little bit. I am running mine at 12 degrees right now. I believe you want to be under 35 degrees when you are at wide open throttle. I would recommend a timing light with the **** on the back to set advance. That way you can just set your **** too 8 degrees (if that's what you want your base at) then turn the distributor until your timing mark lines up with zero and your good to go. It's easier IMO.

Sounds good - thanks. Someone removed the sticker on the hood so I had no idea what it should be at. What rpm should the idle be? Car is stock for now.
