Default camshaft for AFR heads

Hi All,
I have a 1975 L82 ( 4 speed stick) stock motor aside from Flowtech headers. I am installing a Tremec TKO600 5 speed ( gear ratio 2.87 (1st) 0.64 (5th) & 4:10 differential the reason for the diff change is mine is worn out ( at present a 3:55). I also have 255/60x15 tyres ( 26.5 inch tall approx).
I want to rebuild the motor but have not removed the heads yet so am going on the basic specs for my engine 9:1 CR, 76cc Chambers smog heads ( 2.02) L46 hyd cam ( 0.450 in/0.460ex lift 222 duration) flat top pistons.
I am aiming to buy the AFR 180cc 65cc chambered heads, I would like to keep my Quadrajet ( it has just been rebuilt) so my question is what cam & intake should I use. I want a street car with good Vacuum & torque, 1000 to 5000 rpm ( 5500rpm max) not too worried about HP figures,
I am thinking a single pattern cam with short duration & high lift also what is the advantage of a roller cam looking at what my use is ( howards seem the best on price), Any information much appreciated Thanks in advance.

I had good results with Howards roller .510 / 230* cam. use AFR 180cc heads and a .019 head gasket and you will be happy.

There is no reason other than $$$ to use a flat tappet cam...and if you wipe a lobe, the roller will have been cheaper. Roller button Setup can be a PITA though.

search for my L82 build or JBL78s thread... we both have done this.

PS; I wouldnt go 4:10 with that 5speed.... 1st will be stupid low. 3:48 would be perfect. 3;55 would be fine.

With your 5 speed I would go 3.55 or 3.70 max and look at the TKO 600RR with .80 overdrive. The 3.70 will pull real hard off the line, closer ratios and .80 5th gear cruise will be like you have a 2.96 gear, 3000 RPM @ 80 MPH. Your right there with looking at high lift, single pattern cam. If your .025 in the hole with 5 CC flat tops, use a felpro 1094 gasket, and order the 180 65cc heads with the standard 8017 springs. This cam fits your build and needs well. Will end up with 10.27 to 1 compression, 8.19 to 1 DCR, .040 quench and operating range 2000 to 5800. Will probably run on top tier regular gas. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hr...make/chevrolet
Your L82 intake is pretty good with 180 heads.

63Mako suggested the Howards roller-.525/.525, duration 219/225, LSA 110 with my AFR 180 65CC heads. I totally rebuilt my L-82 using the original block .030 over with JE Forged 9:1 racing pistons and The Felpro 1094 .015 gasket, along with the L-82 intake. I too have a 4 speed with 3.70 gears and the engine has serious mid range torque and pulls hard to 6,000 RPM-it is still a little shocking compared to the old L-82. Really happy with the Howards roller cam and the AFR heads. Car runs great on 89 gas and even had 87 in the tank when I first started the new motor and it ran great-no detonation-zero.

^That is my cam but Summit Lists the lift @ .510/.525 but Howards back in the Spring when I bought mine and the Howards catalog today lists the cam with the specs I gave you above……525/.525

Could not be happier. My builder of the L-82 block lower end, loved the combo too with the AFR heads…I run a Holley 4175 650 CFM carb with my setup.

BTW-With the power my L-82 355 has now, there is not a chance I would go with 4.11 gears either. I think that the 3.55 are the perfect compromise gear even with a .64 OD but certainly good to go with no more than 3.70's….Just me.

PM if you have questions or ask 63mako (knows his stuff) and/or DucatiDon who also gave me some good advice-all appreciated!!!

His 5 speed, 2.87 1st gear, long tube headers and gearing will handle a little more cam and want a single duration cam he will fly into the powerband quick with 3.55 or 3.70 and the trans. Does Howards have a single duration 272/272 110 LSA SBC Retro roller. I can't access the catalog and Summit don't list it.

With a peak of 5500 rpm and the afr180 heads you won't need much camshaft. In a Hyd roller you would be at around 212/216 @.050. This would be a 230/234 in flat tappet because of area under the curve.

I just got a 78 vette. supposed to have 290 hp at the wheels. has roller rockers in it now. looking to upgrade to these same afr heads . looking for a cam also. car has a 700r4 trans with 3:73 gears. was looking at the comp xe cams. will also be switching to side headers and a mild stall converter also. has headers now with crappy mufflers. I want a nice lumpy idle and no vacume issues. would the howards fit this ?
