Default 71 Corvette fan question

So, I installed an aluminum radiator in my 71. I also replaced the fan shroud (original was cracked and was being held back with zip ties). The problem now is the clutch fan will not fit with the new shroud...what gives? The shroud is identical to the factory...any help would be appreciated. What size fan should be in the 71?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,
I believe the size of the fan depends on whether the car is a sb or bb, and also whether it has a/c or not. Whether a car has a/c or not influences the number of blades too. 5 blades without a/c, 7 blades with a/c.
The fan on a sb without a/c is 18" in diameter.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. It's a small block, no air conditioning. It is the 5 blade fan and it is 18". Motor is not the original, could it have the wrong water pump?

Why won't it fit? Too high/low/forward/aft?

Hi Bill,
I'll ask the same questions as Mike did.

Alan and Mike,

It's to high. The shroud has the same part number as the one I took out. The radiator is the same size as the original.

If the rad is seated properly, then your motor mounts might be too low.

I read your post as the fan is to high. Agree with Mike though about motor mounts. I just replaced the swollen, separated mounts on the 72 and could see the clearance difference between the top of the fan and the shroud.

The fan shroud has elongated mounting holes. If you don't have the sealing strip on the top of the shroud it could be mounted to low.
