Differential gear oil question...
I noticed a few drops of gear oil on the garage floor below the differential. I had a close look today, and fortunately it looks as if the shaft seals are ok, but the fill plug was leaking a bit. So I removed the plug and gear oil instant started to flow out! Isn't the level supposed to be in line the bottom of the fill plug?
The fluid was a little warm, but certainly not hot, and I was parked in my driveway, which has a very slight slope, but judging by the amount that came out, I'd say it was over filled. Is this a problem, or common practice?
Also, what brand of gear oil should I buy in case I need to top it up?
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it is only supposed to be filled to the bottom of the fill hole. I stick my finger in there, and when I can feel fluid just below the hole, I call it good. If you need to top it off, it might not hurt to do so with a bottle of GM posi additive.

My plug will leak a bit if I don't use teflon tape on the threads.
Proper fluid level is to the bottom of the hole. (Just starting to run out)
Car must be on level surface.
A little over full won't cause any problems.
