Yes! They are plugged. I can see a blob sticking out the underside. One side had old nasty fuel still in it. How big should those holes be? Or should I junk it and buy a Holley and another intake? ; )

Those holes will be pretty big. They transfer air from the air horn to passages in the throttle body. IIRC, they're possibly as big as a 1/4". The passages in the throttle body determine how much actual bypass air is created.

Plugs popped right out, sweet! Good catch Lars. The holes are a good 3/16". Now to give Cliff a call to get a kit put together. Maybe some more coaching to make this more of a Vette carb than a Malibu carb. I must say this is going better than expected.

I spoke with Cliff Ruggles. Basically he is saving me all the math and is sending me a "plug and play" kit. Based on all the parameters of my car: carb, heads, intake, cam, exhaust system, and the like. I'll get new jets, rods, springs even a choke pull off and electric choke. Says that it should wake it up a bit. I'm pumped!!

Yup, every time I've rebuilt a carb for someone using one of Cliff's kits, they've had a bit more snap than they did before.

After some guidance from Cliff, I got my carb back together. Now it seems I missed another plug. This one is the "A" port where the choke pull off is to get it's vacuum from. Can I use the "B" port instead of pulling the carb back apart?

That port is just manifold vacuum AFAIK. The front port is a convenience port... but I could be wrong.

I bought a reman Q-jet from Ecklers...something like $400...piece of junk! I couldn't even get it to idle! Was worse than my factory carb.

I sent my factory carb to Lars last summer. I also sent him a "donor" carb I had in my garage. He was able to combine the two carbs into one excellent carb. Literally the BEST money I have ever spent on my car. Runs PURRfectly!

Thanks again Lars!!

I'm very happy with the parts and service I've gotten with Cliff so far. Always answers the phone, plus he's on my side of the Mississippi! No disrespect to Lars, I have gotten some good info from his papers.

4-19; Pulled the air horn back off and found that the A and B ports get their vacuum from the same place. So I removed the plug in the A port and have the choke pull off there.

Carburetor is all together, intake on, distributor (with upgraded weights, springs and new module) installed.
Got 'er running to set timing... water pump leaking, oh well, changed that.
Set timing per Lars' paper. Took out 'er for a run and seemed very sluggish. Got 'er home to go over the timing and my non-adjustable, antique timing light crapped out! So I turned the distributor clockwise to get it to run better, so I think missed something in Lars' paper. I'm hoping my local Auto Zone has an adjustable timing light.
Carb work's good, many thanks for all the help forum!

Helpful thread....

Previous "rebuilder" employed some interesting tricks!
1. Plugged air bleed holes on both sides
2. Cut the pin off the bottom of the Power Piston. Is it ruined now? Replacements Any where?
NOTE: Primary Jets are not stamped but look like 70s instead of 76s!
3. The idle vent valve in the Air Horn was removed, sealed shut with a plug. Is that ok?
4. Also drilled hole into baseplate, front passenger side. Can I epoxy this or is it shot!

Hey TeaEye,
#1 - Unplug the air pockets. See Lars reply in this thread.
#2 - You can probably get a replacement power piston in a rebuild kit from Cliff Ruggles along with upgraded rods and jets. Get the book and call Cliff! He's very helpful.

#3 - The yellow pencil is pointing to the plug covering the "adjustable part throttle" APT screw. You get a threaded plug for that in Cliff's kit.
#4 - The red tipped green pencil is pointing to a vacuum port that the brass tube has come out. I looked at mine and it is capped.
