Default 1969 windshield washers

My next job is to get a set of windshield washers on the car. I did get the windshield wipers up and running. In its previous life, the cars washers were old and brittle and someone just removed the entire system.
I know have many of the parts required but don't quite understand the system.
I purchased the 1969 windshield wiper motor and the 1969 - 1973 windshield washer 3 port pump.
There also seems to be a 1969 only headlight squirt pump for sale for about 200. (seems kind of pricey but I am getting used to that)
Can I run the system with just the 3 port washer only and ignore the headlight squirt pump for the time being?
Am I correct in thinking 1968 had no headlight washer system, 1969 all had the system using 2 separate components and 1970 - 1973 used one pump to do windshield and the headlights at the same time?
These 1969 washers seem like a bit of a mine field.
Thanks as always for any advice!

Hi V,
I believe you're right in that the headlight washer system began for the 69 model year cars and continued through just the 70 model year. (A few 'stray' parts of the system are seen on early 71 model year cars but I don't think any 71 cars had operating systems).
The 69 system had the additional 2 port valve for the headlight washers while the 70 pump had five ports. (One supply, two windshield, two headlights).
The 69 windshield washers can function independent of the headlight washer system.
Regards,
Alan

Not sure if anyone has ever gotten the 69 washer system functional.

I could never get mine working.

I have.. but what a pain...

You can run the washer pump without the headlamp washers by not running the jumper wires from the pump to the headlamp washer electromagnetic solenoid.

You see the two jumper wires in the picture below. Don't plug the wire harness from the firewall into them, just bypass them and plug the harness wires (yellow and blue) into the washer pump direct.

Default Needle valve in washer diverter solenoid

While working on the washer system of a '69, I accidentally let the spring and needle valve pop out of the diverter and I didn't get to see its orientation as it flew across the room. Does it go back in long end first with the short end toward the wiper motor, or vice-versa? Also, the electric feed to the solenoid appears to plug in either direction. Does it matter which way it is connected? Thanks, everybody!
