Transmission Problem!
I have a 1981 Corvette that I bought a few months ago. Whenever I used it I always heard a clanking noise when I put it in drive, however when I was driving it the other day, I went to get on a highway the car started to accelerate and then just went into neutral and I had to coast off the road. No noise or warning. Is that the transmission or could it be something else?

Let me play Captain Obvious for a while....
What's the fluid look like, smell burnt? The clank could be the rear snubber cushion, not directly related to transmission.

Do any other gears work? If yes its rebuild time, if the torque converter went then have them flush it while its apart. I had one go and they didnt flush it and the tranny went again in a few months

A rebuilt transmission needs a new or rebuilt converter. No amount of flushing can rid the converter of all contamination.

Normal operation they do not go into neutral by them selves.
Get it up in air check all 6 u joints for ware & the snubbed mount in front of the rear end.
Also check the rear wheel bearings, clunking can mean many different things.
Good luck
