Hi Tom! The link works for me too - in fact, I've got the TKOII on order! :D

It will be here in a few weeks so she'll be up on blocks again.

i checked out that site. still all the more reason i'd like a doug nash 5 speed. my diff is already rebuilt so i don't want to change out those gears, espeically if i'm buying a new trans. and with 2.73:1 R&P, i hardly need much OD at all. as it is, i'm only turning 2600rpm a 75. don't really think i want to go alot lower than that. i'd like to see someone make a trans with more gear selections then i'd be alot more interested in that kit.

Default Re: Bolt In 5 spd Overdrive??? (clutchdust)

Clutch, that is a very rare r/pinion set there, very rare, hard to find....
at one time Florida Caliper (I think) had them in stock...been a few years though...

it's a viable solution with a wide ratio muncie, and I maybe should have done that instead of the o/drive automatic...
but the o/drive auto gave me a 30% reduction, and the 2.73 from 3.36 is only a 20% reduction....
thing is, had I known I whould have done a 200 4r tranny instead.....

or IF it didn't cost so damn much money...at the time about 3-4 grand for a conversion...I would have done the stick tranny and had done with it....

Hey, Gene,
That R&P, (actually a 2.72, I think) might be rare for a pre-'80 diff, but it's the stock item on a 80-81 with manual trans. Apparently, those don't interchange. :(

I'm with Clutchdust on this one. I wouldn't mind a little overdrive, but a Richmond Street 5-speed mated to the stock 2.72 '81 rear gears will give me more of what I want than would a TKO. I like the idea of having more closely spaced gears. And, as I understand it, the Richmond is a true bolt-in replacement for the B-W Super T-10, no driveshaft change, etc.

At least, that's why it's on my wishlist... :blueangel:

How much torque will the transmission take, what's it rated for?

gator, just between me and you <wispering under breathe>, i talked to richmond about an R&P set for our dana and they said it's the same R&P as used in some jeep and 4x4 front danas. we just have to get the kind with the gears cut correctly. the bonus is it's actually cheaper for us to buy these gears than for the guys with '63-'79 dana 36's.
even so, i figure a minimum of an additional $500 to change the R&P and that's if i R&R the diff myself. i have no desire to incure that kind of addtional cost for the 5 or 6 speed gearing i want. i'd rather spend an extra couple hundred dollars on the doug nash/richmond 5.
from what i understand from people who have done the 5-speed conversion with the doug nash/richmond, it's ALMOST a bolt in. the differences i do know of are 1) the mount on the crossmember has to be modified. 2) the 5-speed takes a different yoke, out of a TH350 or TH400 if i remember correctly. and 3) the trans tunnel may need to be notched slightly to clear the shifter.

from:
http://www.richmondgear.com/01pdfs/pages25-27.pdf

The Richmond Street 5-speed is rated at 450 lbs/ft of torque, with this gearset:
1 - 3.28
2 - 2.13 (35% drop)
3 - 1.57 (26% drop)
4 - 1.24 (21% drop)
5 - 1.00 (19% drop)

It is available with a 4.06 1st gear / 2.22 2nd gear, but those are really for rock climbers. The extra-low 1st also drops the torque rating to 400 lbs/ft.

The standard gearset (3.28 1st) combined with my 2.72 rear gear would give me 8.92:1 total gear, which is just about right, I think. I've always thought something around 10:1 was about the max anyone would want to use on a street-driven Vette, with a healthy amount of torque available. Any more gear than that would just make tire smoke.

At the track, of course, with slicks and a drag-tuned rear suspension, none of that thinking applies...

So has anyone installed the keisler in a C3 with fixed crossmember yet? When I did my tremec (non-keisler), I could see no way to mount it without cutting the crossmember.

As for comparing the richmond 5-speed to the tremec... IMHO there is no comparison. The internal rail mechanism of the tremec shifts much better than the external rail on the richmond.

Do you mean you hd to cut it even without the eng in or you had to cut it to get it in with the eng in? Guess from what they arre saying you sould be able to do it with the eng it but I don't even want to try doing that with the Muncie. I pulled the eng so I had room to work, up on a lift it might be diff but on your back in the garage no thank you.

Zwede,

By following the thread in the C2 section - it looked as if the bellhousing had to be loosened, rotated downward so the input shaft could be slid through the opening, then the whole thing rotated back up into position. Bad description I know.....but it seems like it would work.

I'm waiting to hear about the 5-speed/crossmember installation as well. I've owned a Richmond equipped car, and I wasn't happy about the shifting, so I'm hoping the internal rail design is a better mousetrap for street use.

I'm sure you can get the tremec in if you take the engine out first. Grandsport did it that way.

I didn't want to take the engine out, though so I made the crossmember removable.

While I really like my Richmond 5-speed, I have to agree with Markus regarding the shift feel/effort. I've had several Tremecs (one TKO) and BW T5 trannies (in different cars, not the Vette) and they shift better than the Richmond. But I'm getting used to the notchier Richmond, and my 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are very, very crisp now. 1-2 takes more effort than I'd like it to, but it may just need some adjustment.

altho I would not call it a bolt in I have been running a tremec TKO for 3 years now in my Vette I was doing a complete engine/trans swap and installed them as a unit had to modify the trans mount, drive shaft and make a new shift plate I have a B&M ripper shifter and love the set-up. I got mine from Forte's Parts gear spacing is fine cruise at under 2000 65 mph
