Dyno #s for new BBC combo
For those who might have missed the recent posts on my new BBC combo, here's what I have:
454ci, GM crate motor
~9.5:1 CR
AFR 305 heads (CNC chambers, as-cast ports)
Edelbrock RPM AirGap intake
Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam (230/230, .578/.578, 110 LSA)
Holley 950 HP carb
Hooker 2 1/8" sidemount headers, JCL baffles
Richmond 5-speed trans
434rwhp @ 5600rpm
450rwtq @ 4400rpm
Call it luck for a first-time BB build up, but I nailed the combo. Yes, most of you hardcore hot-rodders are going to say I need more cam, and if I was going for max power and a higher rev-range I would completely agree. Slap a solid roller in the 244-248 range and it would probably make peak HP at ~6500+ and it would be in the 470rwhp range. But that was not the intent of this exercise. :)
The TQ curve is flat, and HP doesn't drop off much at all. 5600rpm peak may sound really low, but it is still at 410+rwhp at 6400rpm. I will shift this thing at 6200rpm or so.
I can't go crazy with timing (34^ total advance now) b/c I have a locked-out type MSD distributor (no vac. advance). So I have to be wary of having too high of timing at idle (its ~20-21^ right now).
My butt-meter maintained its reputation, though. I said the other day this car was faster than my Z06 was stock (which ran 12.3 @ 116mph) and that the car would run 11s. Well, these numbers bear that out. Should be a solid 120-122mph trap car...ET dependent upon traction, of course. :)
All in all a very nice end to a build-up that I researched ad nauseum.
Now, I'm just gonna DRIVE it! :D
A big thanks to all those who have provided help/encouragement/and info from their own experiences. I'm sure I'll miss someone, but here goes: Chuck Harmon, Jim (427Hotrod), Corey 68, Zwede, Bence, Flareside, Norval, GDaina and others. You all are great and I appreciate the help from this forum.

Now those are some GREAT numbers! Congrats! Looks like AFR is maintaining their reputation of producing excellent heads.

Nice numbers!! Did you dyno with the JCL baffles In or out?

Not too shabby, thats ~515 hp at the crank, factoring an 18% drivetrain loss. Know it's a moot point but I wonder how much hp you could gain by bolting on a set on oval ports instead of the rectangulars. Anybody wanna chance a guess?

WA 2 FST,
Wow! I am impressed! You are motivating me to get the exhaust done on my car and into the dyno shop for some tuning!!
Those cylinder heads surely are the ticket here...
I am hoping for 375 rwhp or so.....

Very impressive numbers on the motor , sure can't beat a BB with strong cam. The 9.5-1 compression works good too, no nead for jet fuel! My setup is very similar to yours and my car sounds very mean, especially out back. Can't wait to pay a visit to the drags in August, hoping to be in the low 13's or high 12's....

I know several alum. oval port cars with CR, camming, and exhaust that's pretty close to mine and they are ~400rwhp.
515hp (flywheel) isn't earth-shattering I know, but at only 5600rpm I think one would be hard-pressed to get significantly more, if any, than that. :)

Sounds like you got just what you wanted Wes, contrats!
Welcome to the "everyone says my cam is too small for my engine" club. I'm a lifelong member... I admire you for building it the way you want it, semi-regardless of what the dyno shows (although 430 RWHP is still a bunch!)
Since this is a strong street car, do you plan to go with a vacuum advance? Maybe you don't do much highway cruising and don't need it?

Re: Dyno #s for new BBC combo (Flareside)
Joe,
Thanks. I still have plenty of your e-mails printed out on paper for future reference. I sincerely appreciate your help over the last 6 months or so in answering my questions.
Yes, I basically got what I wanted. I said all along, before I bought one engine part, that I would be happy at 420rwhp. So I made that and change. As far as the cam goes... I figured it would make peak HP closer to 6k, but 56-5700 is fine, too. :) Especially given the fact that the thing pulls to 6400 with ease and still makes solid power. I guess a few more degrees of duration would have been ok. Would have bumped peak HP to 6k (which following the graph would probably have put it at 445rwhp).
I have to admit I left 10-15rwhp on the dyno today. It's jetted a bit rich (~12.0:1 A/F ratio), but its also 100^F outside, and when it gets cool again I'll be glad I kept it where its at. And it will make more power to boot.
As far as the vac. advance goes, I'm a bit lost as to why it might help me on the highway? Gas mileage/fuel efficiency? I do know that all my EFI cars I've tinkered with will show 35-40+^ advance at part-throttle...and is a good reason they get good gas mileage, I know.
I don't do lots of highway driving, but definitely some. just no really long highway trips... maybe 30 miles at a time. This MSD dist. is nearly new, so I'm not sure I want to buy another just to give me vac. advance.

That sounds like a fun car!! Does it all fit under the stock BB hood?
What Air cleaner are you using?
Thanks,

No, I had to get an L88 hood. I'm running a 3" K&N aircleaner with an Extreme lid.
Here's a pic with the new hood.
