I have a 69 corvette, 350 4 speed. It currently has a dual point tach drive in it. I would like to modernize it with hei technology. What is your experiences and recommendations on this? :confused:

I have the same set up. Accel dual point tac drive, no VA. I've thought about the going to a HEI, but I think it would be easier to go with a drop in unit like the pertronix II. I have the pertonix I on another car. No problems so far. Never have to set points again, and I believe it will be cheper than and HEI Tac drive. Most likely will need to adjust the timming curve on the HEI and get the correct VA unit to fit your needs.

I have the Crane XRi unit in my 74, Installed it a few months ago. no problems so far.

I had Pertronix but went back to points. Really not a big deal keeping points.

I installed the Breakerless SE points replacement kit during July 4th weekend. I love it. Car has never run better. A bit pricier than similar kits, but uses the existing coil wire only. Good luck with your decision. :seeya

Drop in an HEI, and convert your tach to electronic. Many good HEI units avail. If budget concerns, purchase a used HEI dist and tach, rebuild dist. :chevy

Not to hijack this thread but I have a unilite tach drive in my 74, can this be used (or modified to be used) with a Tuned Port setup?

HEI is nice, but if you have the money a MSD set up with their tach drive distributor and a 6 box is nice. I am personally been through a points distributor with my original motor, a HEI with the ZZ4, and now I am going to a MSD with a digital 6 box cause I want my original cable driven tach back.

I'm running a DUI HEI with mech tach drive on a '70 BB. No problems.

Just curious if anyone has switched from points to the Ignitor or Ignitor II replacement?

I had an Ignitor 2 it left me stranded one night. I had to get a ride back to my place to get all the points and original distributor stuff. I then proceeded to pull the distributor and repalce the guts and stab it back on the side of the road. It was not my idea of fun, and I think it was mostly due to the design of the Ignitor 2. The rivets that hold the pickup had some how worn loose and caused it to go out of clearance. The unit was only 3 months old when this happened.

I switch my '69/350 to an Ignitor about a year ago and have had no problems at all. Always starts right up and idle is rock solid.

pws69, just remember not to leave key turned to fwd position for more than a minute or it will fry. Ask me how I know! Ignitor II doesnt have this problem I've read.
