Default starter bolt pattern on 400 SBC?

I know that on 350 blocks - you can find the offset and straight bolt pattern for starter motors. Corvette blocks usually use offset bolt pattern.. I wonder if 400 blocks are available with both patterns or if they are always a certain pattern??

I can't say for sure about all 400 blocks, but my 1972 400 block, casting number 3951511, uses the offset mounting bolts. The starter in mine is a NAPA #46-4795.

Good luck,
Jeff

I'm going with a mini starter.. The starters for offset pattern are $50 - $60 more expensive

I just went out to my garage and checked my 400...it's sitting on my engine stand. Mine has a mounting hole with threads inline. It appears that either type of starter will work...at least on my particular block.

Do you have your engine handy? For $50.00 + dollars, I would check it for the dual mounts.

Good luck,
Jeff

Don't have the engine yet.. I could've checked myself.. Will call the builder tomorrow anyway to check about the starter bolt pattern..

If you would have stayed with the manual trans you could have just push started it

My '73 406 has an offset starter bolt pattern. I used a CVR starter part # 5323OS.
It is a Canadian made unit, very high quality, and it cost me $130 CAN or about $110 US

If the block doesn't have both patterns the extra hole can be drilled and tapped. That's what I had to do with my 350 when I went to the small flywheel. And with the engine out of the car it would be so much easier, I did mine from below while the car was on the hoist.

true.. but being competitive in bracket racing is more important to me than to be able to push start the car...
