What makes a Stingray a Stingray?
Does the Sting Ray/Stingray name refer to anything special or were all Corvettes labeled as Sting Ray/Stingrays from 1963 to 1976?

The name "Sting Ray" came along with the new for '63 body style.
From '63 to '67 they were all "Corvette Sting Ray" (Sting Ray being two words).
After 1967.........................who cares.

The original concept car that became the '63 I believe was called Mako shark - it had more exaggerated styling.. I think they had dangerous fish in mind with this style when the 63 came out!

The name was reused on several C3 years and then finally disappeared. A few still call all Corvettes Stingrays?? In actually all Corvettes do have that same high fender bulge that was built into the C2, but I think the name died in 1976 never to appear again on a Corvette. I have read however that GM is toying with the idea of bringing back the name plate on the Solace and Sky platform for Chevrolet. They suggest calling it Stingray. This I believe would be a big mistake.Sometimes name plates are better left dead. Ask the people at Ford about that one with the Thunderbird fiasco of several years ago.
