The original concept car that became the '63 I believe was called Mako shark - it had more exaggerated styling.. I think they had dangerous fish in mind with this style when the 63 came out!

Ah here we go - it's from a 1959 race car by the same designer, Larry Shinoda
This is the first Sting Ray 1959
This is a Mako Shark l / 1961 you can see the C2's design in the car.

The name was reused on several C3 years and then finally disappeared. A few still call all Corvettes Stingrays?? In actually all Corvettes do have that same high fender bulge that was built into the C2, but I think the name died in 1976 never to appear again on a Corvette. I have read however that GM is toying with the idea of bringing back the name plate on the Solace and Sky platform for Chevrolet. They suggest calling it Stingray. This I believe would be a big mistake.Sometimes name plates are better left dead. Ask the people at Ford about that one with the Thunderbird fiasco of several years ago.
